I'm running Fedora 11 on an Asus M50 laptop, which has the following optical drive: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N. I've been having issues getting discs to mount (though until just now I was able to burn CDs just fine), and unfortunately I've had a hard time reproducing the various problems. Some relatively consistent symptoms, however, have been:
I'm running Ubuntu Karmic, and for some reason it wont mount dvd's. I started having problems when I upgraded to Karmic when it was released. I am able to mount cds jsut fine, just no dvds. A friend gave me another drive to try, and no dice. So i have the disc for maple 13 that I need for school, i pop it in, nothing. I put the dvd in my wifes machine and it works just fine.

Hello everyone,
I've been using my Acer 5520G for 1.5 years and I haven't taken any errors with my cd/dvd writer until last a few days.
I'm having some issues with my CD/DVD drive in Ubuntu. When I first start up Ubuntu the drive works fine, but after I eject the disc that was in there, it doesn't seem to be able to mount the drive again. When I try to mount it by right clicking, I get this message: mount: special device /dev/scd1 does not exist.
I am trying to burn an audiobook with XFburn, but xfburn says the disc is full.Thunar doesn't show the cd drive, and all atempts to mount it say that I have a bad filesystem.I attempted opening the disc with VLC, mounting it and changing the disc, all to no avail.(I also don't have another drive to cross check with)./dev shows the following drives.cdrom3
cdrom6
cdrw3
cdrw6
dvd3
dvd6
dvdr
I need to use ubuntu for a class project but don't want to have it installed on my computer. I was told I could burn it to a disc and run it from there. How do I do that?
I put the windows installer on the disc already but when I go to download ubuntu from that program, it asks me to make a password and user name and the only option it gives for location is my C:\ drive.
My os is ubuntu 12.10 32 bit desktop. (Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E6500 @ 2.93GHz × 2) .
When trying to burn the lubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso file on a blank DVD-R Disc, using the startup disk creator, I get this error: unable to mount blank DVD-R Disc location is already mounted. I have never encountered such problem before.
What is wrong and how to correct it?
In Fedora 17... Can't Eject Disc After unmount?
Sequence...
Insert cdrom disc
Mount it
# mkdir -p /media/dvdrom
# mount /dev/cdrom /media/dvdrom
<Do something, Copy Files, Whatever...>
Unmount it
# umount /media/dvdrom
Press Eject Button, Nothing Happens?
What now? Kind of weird issue, someone has to have experienced this?
