[ubuntu] Ubuntu Server - Noob Question :)

http://ubuntuforums.org – I am new to Ubuntu (desktop) and will never go back to win/mac. Thank you ;) I am also new to Ubuntu Server. I have an oldie-but-goody dual xeon Gateway 9510 server (link to product page) that had Windows 2000 installed. I'd like to install Ubuntu desktop onto the box and just use it as workstation and local file server, but the drives are not recognized during the installation. I suspect it has something to do with the raid card configuration or drivers (?) On the flip-side, I don't seem to have an issue installing Ubuntu Server. Would it be possible to install the desktop GUI + Office on (Hardware)

Host OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bits with VMware Workstation 8 Two VMs: Ubuntu Server 12.04 and Ubuntu Desktop 12.04

VMware NAT settings: Use local DHCP service is DISABLED Subnet IP: 192.168.2.0 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway IP: 192.168.2.2

On Ubuntu Server I have a DHCP server: isc-dhcp-server DHCP is working OK.

From what I read, the use of the GUI is discouraged with the server.

Question #1. Does the GUI from the desktop version a functional means of controlling the server functions?

I've been given a Dell PowerEdge 2800 and am trying to get Ubuntu installed on it. The Desktop edition failed as it couldn't see the RAID drives, so I tried 10.10 server edition.

I used to have Ubuntu Server 12.10, and I used to connect to it with my Windows PC using SSH. All I had to do was turn my server computer on and next thing I could do was run my PuTTY and connect to it.
