I am unable to get past the login screen. It won't accept passwords, the screen momentarily goes black, and then returns to the login screen.
I recently found out that you can use CTRL-ALT-F1 to switch from the login screen to the command line. My password works in that situation and I was able to enter terminal mode.
I typed in "startx" to see what would happen.
I'm not quite sure what's causing it, but whenever I reboot instead of the login screen, I've got a black screen with the mouse cursor. If I hit ctrl alt f2 I can login, delete .Xauthority and change my home folder ownership to my account. If I do these things, next time I shut down all the way and then boot up, it loads properly. I'm running 12.10 from a clean install.
I have the same issue as others (see Login returns to login screen [closed]).
When I arrived at the login screen, I enter my password, the screen goes black for one second, displaying some text, and then it returns me to a fresh login screen.
I can go to a console alt+f1 and login into my account on the command line.
It is a fairly fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 64 bit, plenty of room left on th
I have written an article about how to customize the Ubuntu login screen. After you edit the login screen, you may want to share your work on blogs and forums. However, you simply cannot just press the print-screen button to take screenshot of the login screen in Ubuntu. To do so, you can use a workaround command to preview the login screen and take screenshot of it.
I am trying to install lubuntu 12.1 PPC using the alt cd on an ibook g4. I've been having a few problems. First, when lubuntu boots it only boots to a black screen, my cursor is visible and brightness functions work but that's it, no login screen ever comes up. I tried logging in after pressing ctrl+alt+f1 but my login didn't work.
When I attempt to log into my account the screen goes black and then falls back to the login screen. I have pressed CTRL+ALT+F1 and was able to log in from there, however when I tried startx I got an error from x.org (I will try to write it down in a minute). The guest account works flawlessly so I am currently logged into that and created a temporary admin account through the settings panel.
I installed Lubuntu 12.10 PPC alt. install on my ibook g4, yaboot failed to install so I used the advice given in the PPC FAQ here, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#I.27ve_lost_yaboot.2C_what_can_I_do.3F and I was able to boot to a black screen with and move the arrow but thats all, when trying to login by pressting ctrl+alt+f1 I kept getting "invalid" login.
My laptop gives me a black screen intead of the Desktop, I can't even get to the login screen. I've had this problem ever since the instalation, so I connected a screen to my laptop to install Ubuntu thinking that the problem would go away with updates or something like that. I'm still using my pc's screen because I cannot eveng et the login screen.
I just installed Ubuntu in dual boot with windows 7.. I'm new to ubuntu so i found it very hard to install nvdia drivers for my nvdia graphic card.. I tried following some guides, with no luck and now my ubuntu login screen is stuck in a bootloop.
