Due to a bug my computer has stopped in the middle of the boot sequence, just waiting. If I type anything, it prints stuff like ^[[B. I do not want to damage the files on the computer by pressing the power button.
Is there some way I can exit the boot sequence and go to a prompt so that I can type shutdown -h now or reboot to safely turn off or restart the system?
I don't know what i did or what happened?
but my ubuntu logs off on clicking shutdown...
running the shutdown or reboot command too doesn't shutdown....
how can i find the log?
all i know is there is a message saying ....
Power_table_CMD wait for 500 sec
and something similar
it gets stuck on Ubuntu Plymouth...
I have to long press the power button on my Laptop to shut it off
I have ubuntu 11.10 64bit, everything worked fine but after i uninstalled the airtime dj app i can't restart or shutdown my pc !! The only way to reach at the screen showing that system is going to shutdown is via terminal but it stucks and never shuts down !
I can't even restart it !
I can suspend my pc fine but can't shutdown or restart it.
Once ubuntu finished installing; after removing DVD and pressing enter when requested system never managed to shutdown properly in order to start POST just get a black screen with no input so no tty or cli or alt + sysrq +reisub so power button on case had to be used.
HI
Whenever I update software and then asked to restart the computer (pressing the "Restart" button) my laptop closes as normal, but on restart hangs with a dark screen and a large flashing line in the top left hand corner. I then have to power down the computer by pressing the power button, restart then act as normal.
Hello,
When I run 9.10 as LiveCD on IBM Thinkpad 600x, Shutdown and Reboot work fine. Shutdown can power off the Thinkpad and Reboot can reboot.
However when install to harddisk, Shutdown cannot power off and Reboot restarts the Thinkpad but stop at memory test.
Hi there,
being quite new to Ubuntu I encountered the following issue:
On Ubuntu 12.04.1 pressing the physical power button on the machine shuts down the pc. However, this only works if a user is logged in, i.e. there's no effect of power button presses at the login screen.
Is this the intended behavior?
It is really very strange.
On my PC running UBUNTU 12.04 LTS is behaving strange since past 15 days.
If I click any of these Logout, Switch User, Shutdown, Restart etc from one user account which has got administrative rights, UBUNTU tottally Freezes and then only way out is hard-reboot by pressing power button on the box.
Pressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running.
I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)
I've taken the following advice found on this forum:
