[ubuntu] Sound problems after regular updates 12.04.1LTS

http://ubuntuforums.org – I'm on a Hp laptop and I've been running Ubuntu for several months without a single sound issue. After a regular update notice popped up, I updated the 20 or so things. Now whenever the PC locks the screen from being idle too long I loose sound from my headphone jack (into my external speakers) and onboard speakers when I unplug the externals. All sound gets defaulted to run through my HDMI and through a second monitor. Under SOUND it still shows my two options of HDMI/Displayport and HEADPHONES but only the HDMI has sound. Also there is a "mute" hotkey on one of my F-keys (Hardware)

Hi, I have a problem with my sound output connector.

Whenever I log in, the default sound output connector is "HDMI" (when I look in the Sound Settings under Output) and my computer's HDMI port is not connected to anything. When I try to play any sounds the speakers on my laptop emit no sound.

Hi,

I have a laptop with onboard speakers and a headphone jack. If you use the headphone jack the onboard speakers stop.

This is good because my onboard speakers are broken so i plug my headphones into the headphone jack and i still have sound :D

I used one of the help guides for establishing hdmi sound here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2142636 and also installed pulseaudio volume control. I can see the hdmi sound which would come out of my tv speakers yet isn't. In PulseAudio, the sound bar pulses which shows sound activity. The picture is great. The sound is no longer sent out of the built in speakers. My TV is not muted.

I am having some problems getting sound to work over the HDMI interface on my laptop. I have tried going to System/Preferences/Sound to try and change the settings to HDMI but there are no HDMI options to choose from. How do I find out if HDMI sound is supported by the nvidia drivers I am using? I had a look at this thread;

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and this morning when I tried to use Skype the headphones didn't have sound. I tried my speakers and also no sound. However, the built in speakers of the laptop work. but cuit out once a jack is connected. It reckognises the headphones or the speakers, but no sound. And yes, the volume is up.

Any ideas.

Sound problem, no HDMI output Hi all,

Ubuntu 12.04 desktop 64bit ASUS mobo M5A97R2.0 audio Realtek ALC887

I have been struggling more than a week unable solving the sound problem via HDMI output.

On sound setting -> Output HDMI/DisplayPort disappears on "Play sound through"

I have another HD on this PC running Fedora 17 desktop 64bit. There is no problem on sound output via HDMI.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto a Sony Vaio VGN-SR41M laptop and have had no problems until I tried to connect it to a TV. I used a HDMI cable and the picture worked fine however no sound was coming from the speakers on the TV. I tried to change the output to the HDMI output in the sound settings but still couldn't get it to work.

I am running Ubuntu 12.10 using the "wubi" tool on my HP Pavilion dv5-1080ei with Windows 8. When I ran Ubuntu for the first time my monitor/tv connected via the hdmi had no pic coming to it even though it was showing up in the display settings.
