I don't know what i did or what happened?
but my ubuntu logs off on clicking shutdown...
running the shutdown or reboot command too doesn't shutdown....
how can i find the log?
all i know is there is a message saying ....

I have to long press the power button on my Laptop to shut it off
Hi,friends
I vividly remember the beep in 9.04 when I shutdown the computer
sudo shutdown -h now
and I will hear a "DI"/"Bee" sound
sudo shutdown -h +5
and I will hear 5 beeps every minute till it is power off
The beep is a great warning for me and I really need this feature
As the title says: when I click Shutdown from the menu it logs off. When I click shutdown from the log-in menu it does nothing. I'm using a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. I can force it to shutdown by the command below, but I don't want to keep typing that whenever I want to shutdown my laptop.
sudo shutdown -h now
So it's probably processes which arn't closing.
I'm looking for a log file that shows what programs are running at shutdown and if a program hangs during shutdown.
I have this one program that constantly hangs, and shows up as an unknown program, during shutdown/reboot/log-off. I think there should be a log of the shutdown process, but I have no idea where to find it.
Sometimes(rather many times), when I shutdown using the menu option >> Shutdown, the system hangs at a Purple screen with dots. I have waited for 10 mins, but then it becomes clear that i need to do a hard shutdown using power button.
I am using Ubuntu 64 bit AMD edition(12.04.1 LTS) on HP Proliant Microserver(N40L) with OEM hardware.
With 11.2 and Gnome occasionally it will not shutdown properly. I press the shutdown button and then Gnome starts the shutdown sequence. It terminates the desktop and falls back to GDM, which in it self is normal. However it then just stops, I can't click anything and the system is not responding either. When I press the physical button on my PC I get the menu of shutdown again.
Some are fairly obvious. Specifically, I am referring to:
-h halt or power off after shutdown
-H halt after shutdown (implies -h)
-P power off after shutdown (implies -h)
Isn't halting or powering off kind of expected when you're shutting down?
Is there a description of the features and differences between the Desktop and Default kernels?
Did "Desktop" arrive with 11.2 and 2.6.31 ?
I did not notice it at first. I loaded 11.2 on a desktop machine and both default and desktop kernels were loaded to system, with Desktop set as default in grub.
As I said above "Thith doth driveth me nutth."Before I left three weeks ago shutdown was working. So I come back and read pubby's post. I next upgraded so my system would be current.Sure enough the bad penny returns. If I select "shutdown" on the Xfce GUI menu, my system appears to shutdown but the power never turns off. In effect what I get is a re
