I have a System76 Lemur Ultra Thin (lemu4) with Ubuntu 12.04.1 64 bit Long Term Service and I want to set Cinnamon to be the default desktop environment after I login to the Ubuntu Greeter (lightdm). Currently, it is set to the default Unity desktop environment. How do I change it and make everything work properly? Please help me if you can. Thank you.
Unity is the default Desktop environment of Ubuntu 12.04 – Precise Pangolin, LTS (from the last few versions, before that GNOME was the default desktop).
If you’re not happy with the default desktop environment (Unity shell on GNOME3) in Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), then you can try installing some alternative desktop such as MATE, Cinnamon, KDE etc or a lightweight desktop environment such as XFCE.
Why go for a Lightweight Desktop Environment ?
speed
efficiency
low resource requirements (it can also run smooth on older computers)
1.
Unity is the default desktop environment in Ubuntu 12.10. Although, it has improved a lot but if you’re still looking for an alternative desktop with classic GNOME 2 style layout then you may try MATE.
MATE is also a GNOME 3 based desktop (just like unity), it’s easy to use, and the it’s stable too.
Ubuntu 12.10 comes with Unity Desktop environment/shell (based on GNOME 3). A lot of users love unity, they like the cools features of unity (Unity dash, lens, launcher etc) , but there are lots of haters too.
Alternate titles: Review of Cinnamon 1.6; Cinnamon 1.6 screen shot tour; Cinnamon screen shots; Cinnamon 1.6; Cinnamon 1.6 review; Cinnamon desktop.
Presently, Cinnamon is the most buzz-generating and headline-grabbing desktop environment in the Free Software community.
How To Use Glx-Dock/Cairo-Dock On Ubuntu 12.04
Glx-Dock/Cairo-Dock is an interactive dock (like the one you know
from a Mac) that provides easy access to some of the files, folders,
and applications on your computer, and more. You can use it with
OpenGL (to use your graphics card) or without, and it is compatible with
Compiz, but it can also run without a composite manager.
I like Unity a lot for its gorgeous dash and panel look, the global menu and HUD, the super+# shortcuts and that's it.
Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) is rocking! It has gaining tremendous popularity among the common desktop users (specially developers). If you’ve been using Ubuntu for a while, then might be aware about some critical changes in last few versions.
