Ubuntu server apt-get says "(-5 - No address associated with hostname)"

http://serverfault.com – I have a ubuntu 12.04 server. Running sudo apt-get update on it produces errors like this: W: Failed to fetch http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/main/binary-... Something wicked happened resolving 'au.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) I am able to ping all the other hosts on the network and also Google's DNS 8.8.8.8. But am unable to ping www.google.com. So, I'm guessing something is wrong with my DNS setup, but not sure what. I use static IP and my /etc/network/interfaces looks like this: auto eth0 iface e (HowTos)

Possible Duplicate: How do I fix a download issue when updating?

I'm having issues installing programs because of package errors I have been getting, it seems to boil down to these being the offending entries...please tell me what to type in terminal to get rid of these errors!!

Here is what i get when trying to install the update: first I get a window message with all this:

I encountered source related errors when trying to run: sudo apt-get install ruby rubygem I tried to switch quite a few different servers, but non of them works.

Any ideas ?

Failed to fetch repositories 18 weeks 5 days ago

I am having trouble downloading the Ubuntu repositories:

$ sudo apt-get update ... Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-amd64/Packag... 404 Not Found

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/restricted/binary-amd64/... 404 Not Found ...

I can connect to the server fine:

# ping archive.ubuntu.com PING archive.ubuntu.com

I've tried many different ways:

I downloaded the file on the Skype website, which returned me this error "Cannot install ia-32-libs"

I followed this instructions https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype and here is what I got:

I'm sure this has been addressed somewhere, but I'm having trouble finding it. I've just started using Ubuntu 9.10 so if this is an idiot question, that's my excuse (NOOB). Everything's going great except that I keep getting an update alert in my app panel and when I check for updates get the following:

When I press the button "check" to find updates, I always get this error:
