http://ubuntuforums.org – hi, looking for some help with my install. when i boot and it gets past the bios i get a black screen with 2 horizontal lines across instead of the white ubuntu loading symbol. i then hear the noise for the long on prompt. i can then log in blind and get into my install. the thing is this doesn't happen every boot. if i reboot the install a few times it will boot so i can see the log in screen and then log into the desktop which works. my hardware setup is..... samsung syncmaster 244t 7800gt (old style) NVIDIA driver 195.36.15 (re (Hardware)

Hi,

I have been using ubuntu alongside windows for many of these years right from 6.06 days.

I installed ubuntu via Wubi. So the computer should boot and screen should show me the Boot options (Windows/ubuntu).Am i right ??

For the past 2 months, I have been facing this problem.

I cannot get the new 11.2 to install on my machine. THe moment i hit enter at the boot prompt to begin installation, the scree just goes black and unresponsive - caps & scroll lock lights on the keyboard light up and remain lit. no disk activity whatsoever. I tried installing various resolutions, in text mode none gets past the black screen.

Alright so I just got my brand new HP Envy 15 in the mail yesterday. Opened it up, checked to make sure the BIOS was up to date (it was, F.06), and installed Ubuntu 9.10. The entire installation goes fine and it reboots. This is where my problems start. First, it will show the white Ubuntu logo in the center of the screen, then the screen just goes black. It seems X is having trouble starting.

I've just installed my laptop with a fresh Ubuntu 9.10. I've tried both 32bit and 64bit.
Just after the install, i log in, take a system update (about 120Mb), and reboot. Then i go system -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers, and install the Nvidia driver package. I've tried both the 173/185, and I've also downloaded and installed the newest 190 driver from the Nvidia site.

I have tried installing 11.2 64 bit with Gnome. Every time if finishes the install and reboots it will start HAL daemon and just black screen. I have tried loading with using the number 3 with no video. Same thing black screen after loading HAL daemon. I did a install with selecting VESA same thing. Any help would be great.

I'm still having a lot of difficulties with 11.2 KDE. None of the video players work properly (and I've installed quite a few in hopes of lucking up on one that'll work); OOo kept crashing, so I uninstalled it and installed Abiword -- it kept crashing too. So I tried to install the Gnome desktop with hopes that it would work better. But it doesn't show up anywhere!
