OK, I've used Windows for 17 years, but I am new with Linux so please understand my crass stupidity:
I have had Unbuntu on this desk PC for 8 months or so & actually did a couple of re-installs at the beginning as I messed up, sorted the swap partition OK, re-sized the Linux partition OK & things when smoothly including the update in April.
Ok, I'm creating a bootable USB drive with multiple linux distros as well as other useful boot tools for pc repair, etc. I'm very close but am not really familiar enough with linux and kernel statements to be able to troubleshoot. I've attached a PNG file showing the file structure on my drive. I've also attached a TXT file showing the Grub menu.lst file.
I am new to Linux. I recently installed Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 onto my portable hard drive. Much to my surprise, it installed half of GRUB to the PC, and half to the PHDD. The PC does not belong to me. GRUB got removed from the PC, but that's not the issue. I want to be able to boot Ubuntu from my PHDD on any PC.

Linux debian 2.6 and GRUB I managed to install it, the boot loader, on a usb flash drive. Right now, If the USB drive is plugged into the computer, the GRUB and the OS starts, otherwise, if the usb is out, nothing happens.
There are some grub files in /boot/grub/ and /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/ but there's no e.g.
I usually Dual boot with 2 separate Hard Drive tot have a backup just in case. Well apparently a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10 just happened to hit the exact thing. It seems the Ubuntu installer picked the Window 7 Hard Drive to install Grub, but sent everything else to the assigned hard-drive.
How can I use a USB flash drive to boot Linux from a partition on (another) hard drive?
I'm trying to install Linux on an encrypted partition on the hard drive (using LVM on LUKS).
Since /boot must be on a separate, unencrypted partition, I would like to store it on a USB flash drive.
My plan was to install GRUB (2) to the flash drive (/dev/sdb) and boot Linux from it's MBR, or if the drive was
I have recently installed Unbuntu 12.10 as a dual OS with Windows 7. Everything has been fine until tonight. I had to install a new DVDRW drive in Windows 7. When I restarted and tried to load Unbuntu it went to a black screen and nothing happened. I am not able to load Unbuntu now. Any ideas whe happened or what I need to do?
