[ubuntu] Raid 6 vs Raid 10

http://ubuntuforums.org – Hi all, I'm setting up a backup server (yes, I know raid isn't a backup). I purchased 4 3TB drives, and I was thinking, is there any point to the performance boost Raid 10 gives over Raid 6? All the accesses will be remote, so even with Gigabit ethernet, I'll max out at 125 MB/s (theoretical). With USB drives running at 480 MB/s (theoretical), it seems like it shouldn't be an issue running Raid 6 (and getting guaranteed recovery from 2 drives failing), since the network will be the bottleneck anyway. Or, is the write performance of Raid 6 that horrible? Actually, I think I figured out (Hardware)

Got a RAID question. My PC has 2 identical 500gb HDs. My BIOS setup does not show anything related to RAID, I've checked every entry, every option, yet the 9.10 installer "sees" RAID.

So, is my hardware physically set up as RAID? How can I check? I'd like to have it as 2 separate drives, and screw RAID. What do I do?

Hey Ubuntu Forums, long time no see. So i'm trying to set up a RAID, but i'm a bit inexperienced and i'm not sure if the configuration i want to achieve is possible. I was hoping someone more knowledgeable could point me in the right direction.

I have software RAID on Ubuntu 10.10 with currently disabled hardware RAID controller, server has 2*500GB in RAID 1 drives for OS and 3TB*4 in RAID 1 for storage. What do i want, create hardware raid at least for storage w/o loosing data, or best option to add two new 3TB drives and create hardware RAID 10. Can I have software RAID for OS and hardware raid for storage ?

disks 0 and 1 are raid redundant (OS) and the remaining 6 drives are in raid 5 I believe. i would like to pull out disks 0 and 1 and install new drives to build a new OS. I need to be able to reinsert the old drives and reboot back to the original OS. (swap) I had a serious problem in the past attempting this.

We're discussing options for a new server. 8 users, SBS2011, Exchange, SQL

We have one supplier recommended the following drives:

2 x 146GB SAS RAID 1 - used by the virtual host operating system

2 x 500GB SATA RAID 1 - used by the SBS servers system and data drive

2 x 146GB SAS RAID 1 - used by the SQL server

Is this a good / recommended way to structure these drives?

I have a Dlink DNS-325 NAS RAID 1+0 with 2x 2tb - this is great but as my wife pointed out we don't currently don't have a back up of this...
