I go to system settings and appearance is gone. I tried searching it in the dash and it is not there. When I right click the desktop and select "Change background" the system settings window opens. I tried going to the ubuntu software center and installing it from there it installed and popped up on my launcher.
I have two identical Acer tablet Netbooks with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed, and being new to Ubuntu, I have tried hard to keep their settings in sync so I know better through changes if the system breaks if I broke it.
I am new here. I was facing issues with emacs-snapshot sourced from a PPA, so I tried following these instructions (blindly =/), and
sudo apt-get remove `apt-cache search emacs | awk '{print $1}'` --purge
took out a big chunk of Ubuntu 12.04 including Software Center, System Settings and probably a few other things that I am not immediately missing.
Still in my first 12 hours of being an Ubuntu user, muddling thru it all the best I can. Cannot seem to find System -> Administration which so many websites have advised me to use to update drivers.
I installed Ubuntu 11.10 from a disc then updated to 12.4 shortly thereafter.
I'm using proprietary driver ATI (FGLRX).
My problem is that after restarting system all settings which I did in Catalyst Control Center does not apply, though displayed correctly (eg gamma set to 0.75, and if I click on the arrow up or down, along with the value settings once applied correctly)
When I restart the system settings are gamma 1.0, although I put them on 0.75.
Ubuntu 11.10
On Deja dup, if i was to click it in the start menu thing it brings me to system settings, when i click on backup nothing happens, but when i try to close the system settings screen it repeatedly opens up, as if i was clicking on system settings and not backup, so it was loading system settings when ever i close it.
So the other day I tried out KDE, and it had fooled around with a few things I didn't like. I followed everyones guidance on how to get it back. This only worked to a certain extent. I dont know how much is the same as it was before, because I haven't run through my whole system yet to see what little minute things have changed.
new ubuntu user. after boot (boot is quite fast), opening applications such as firefox, libra, system settings, takes close to 10 seconds to open. after the application is loaded in RAM, the application opens fine.
the system feels snappy, quick. when i have two FIREFOX open, unity is snappy in showing me the two windows side by side.
I'm a Linux sysadmin and I maintain 100 Ubuntu desktops. We're about to upgrade to 12.04, but before we can do that we have to make Ubuntu PCI complaint. Meaning we have to lock some mandatory settings from the users.
