Everything seems to work okay with the account I created during setup, but any account I create with the "User Accounts" tool (or with adduser/passwd at the command-line) has the same login problem: after the password is entered the screen goes black, and then returns to the login screen. auth.log says this about the attempted logins: "user ingroup nopasswdlogin" not met by user I am guessing this means the system thinks that I want to login without a password, but that's not the case: I haven't set that opti (Hardware)

I have just installed Ubuntu 11.10 DVD ISO (the latest stable version I believe) and boot from by USB stick.

It has been working OK (except for odd crashes - such as "gnome-control-panel" has crashed on the user account screen).

I booted up this morning, and I was presented with a login screen, with a box saying "Other...".

Hi all.

I'm really having a bad headache with this. I have PXE diskless clients booting open suse 11.2. The problem is this sec. policy, the user only has 3 tries for login with the correct user and pass, after the third try, the account blocks the user.

I am unable to get past the login screen. It won't accept passwords, the screen momentarily goes black, and then returns to the login screen.

I recently found out that you can use CTRL-ALT-F1 to switch from the login screen to the command line. My password works in that situation and I was able to enter terminal mode.

I typed in "startx" to see what would happen.

I've got Fedora 18 with Gnome.

When I click a user name on the login screen, the other ones disappear but the password prompt never shows up. It stays this way for a few seconds, then comes back to the original state with the list of users.

This question is usually responded to with "Liveuser does not need a password".

Well believe it or not in some configuration it is not possible to go passed the login screen of Fedora 11 or 12 KDE.

If you just hit enter which should work, it goes black with a blue flasy thing and then back to the login screen.

I have the same issue as others (see Login returns to login screen [closed]).

When I arrived at the login screen, I enter my password, the screen goes black for one second, displaying some text, and then it returns me to a fresh login screen.

I can go to a console alt+f1 and login into my account on the command line.

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 which was working fine till today.

If I try to login using one of my user accounts it directs me back to the login screen, which is followed by a black screen.

I am sure the password I enter is correct because if the password is wrong it prompts "Invalid Password".

On the other hand I am able to login using a root or guest account.

i just created an account with name rashmi and set its password then i restart my Desktop.when i login to rashmi then only a screen appears for less than a second and then vanish and again that Login screen appears.so i am not able to login in to Ubuntu from the newly created user

i created my user with command

sudo useradd rashmi

then set its password using

sudo passwd

can any one pleas

When I create a new user account I ask users to send me a public key, and want to force users to set the password the first time they log in with keypair authentication.
