[ubuntu] Nvidia X Driver Fails to Install

http://ubuntuforums.org – My laptop is the Acer Timeline Ultra M5-481TG. It has an Nvidia Geforce GT 640M LE gpu. I am running Ubuntu Studio 12.10. I have tried to install this driver many ways because Nouveau eats my battery and I believe is somewhat out of date. I have even tried using 'sudo stop lightdm' in another console. I have tried nvidia_current, nvidia_current_updates, nvidia_experimental_310, and the .run file off their website. Every time I open nvidia-settings it tells me to run the 'nvidia-xconfig' as root then restart X. I tried this both in X and with X stopped in an alternate console. I have al (Hardware)

Since I re-installed Ubuntu, I have attempted to install a working nvidia driver. Despite having a functioning NVidia Graphics Card (see below for specifics), I was never offered the chance to install the proprietary driver. As a result, I attempted to install the one from the repos (nvidia_experimental_304).

I removed all packages associated with NVIDIA from Synaptic Package Manager and installed nvidia-current. When I click NVIDIA-Settings, gives an error like this:

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

Please help me, I need your helps.

Just did a new install of Ubuntu 12.10 on my Serp6. I followed the instructions at http://knowledge76.com/index.php/Restoring_Your_System My video card is a NVIDIA G92[GeForce GTX 258M] Unfortunately, I am seeing the following error message:

I've been trying to get my graphic card working under ubuntu and opensuse but to no avail.

First, i tried through additional drivers, but after installation it keeps saying "this driver is activated but not currently in use". That is 3D-accelerated proprietary graphics driver for NVIDIA cards.

I have an ASUS N56VM-TB71 with a GeForce 630M graphics card.

I have 12.04 and when I VGA plugged in a Dell monitor, I am able to use it.

Hello,I was using nouveau with xf86-video-nouveau for some time on my Laptop with GeForce 6150 and AMD Dualcore CPU.Now I wanted to switch back to nvidia or nvidia-ck-kx to be preciese since I'm using the CK Kernel. I have used the CKKernel with nvidia-ck driver before.So I installed nvidia-ck-kx and nvidia-utils to replace libgl with it.

Hopefully someone knows a bit about the nvidia drivers. I am trying to install the drivers on a Lenovo Y580 that has a GTX 660M, running 12.04 64 bit.
