[ubuntu] NVidia HDMI audio device not listed

http://ubuntuforums.org – Hi all, I'm trying to build an Ubuntu XBMC machine and I'm having problems with HDMI audio. I've installed a spanking new version of 12.04 and done a full update. I've also installed the current recommended NVidia drivers which seem to work fine. However I don't get audio over HDMI. In fact I get a constant static style hiss from the speakers. After a bit of research I found I should use aplay -l to determine my device. The problem is my device isn't listed!!! When I do aplay -l I only see one device which looks something like this: **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: PC (Hardware)

I'm trying to get HDMI audio output from a ION system but I'm running out of ideas.

After the install process (12.10 server, xorg, alsa, nvidia-current) I immediately un-muted channels in alsamixer and run

I have an GT520 graphics card and I am trying to get the sound working with my XBMC setup and I'm having trouble.

Things I have completed:

aplay -l

List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

then

lspci

and

which is set to unmu

I've just set up Ubuntu running on what I hope to be a media computer. Video over HDMI works fine but audio does not. I'm using the onboard HDMI port on a Asus F1A75-M motherboard.

Here's a clue:⋯$ aplay -l aplay: device_list:252: no soundcards found...⋯$ aplay -L null Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture) pulse PulseAudio Sound Server default Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)Yet there are three sound devices in the system.

I'd like to use my Geforce 9800GT's HDMI audio as a separate sound device. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10.

I am a first time user of Ubuntu. I recently installed it as a dualboot with Windows 7. I have Logitech USB speakers which work fine in Windows. However, I can't get any audio to play in Ubuntu.

I've bought a tv a few days ago, tried to connect my laptop via hdmi cable to it - worked perfectly, I just had to choose right audio device output as hdmi and it worked with no issues.

So I've tried to connect my desktop computer to the tv using hdmi cable - video works with no issues, but there's no sound.
