[ubuntu] Nvidia GeForce 6200 PCI issues

http://ubuntuforums.org – I have Karmic Koala 9.10 and have tried all 3 versions of the drivers. Version 96, version 173, and version 185 (recommended). But this version of Ubuntu won't allow either the Normal or Extra desktop effects. Jaunty Jackalope did. I am unable in this Ubuntu version to use the Compiz effects. I have all of the required parts to Compiz too. I can select anything in it but nothing takes effect. Why? Is there a work around? (Hardware)

I have a P4 2.4 Ghz machine with a nVidia geForce 6200 pci card, 256mb. I have tried at least 4 iterations of Mint and other Ubuntu variants, trying to find a distro that will install the proper drivers that will enable desktop effects and run compiz.

Hi, I'm having some trouble running the Extra or Normal Settings in the Appearance/Visual effects setting on ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.31-12. with an Intel GMA X4500HD. I get an error message that says "Desktop Effects could not be enabled."

I'm trying to get compiz to run and avant dock does not seem to respond either without the Visual effects enabled.

Who doesn't like some eyecandy for their desktops, definitely not me. Compiz has enthralled Ubuntu users for years now. When GNOME officially ditched Compiz for Mutter for its next version, Ubuntu decided to stick with Compiz for its Unity Shell.
