[ubuntu] Non responsive mouse and keyboard

http://ubuntuforums.org – After installing the Ubuntu multiverse to play restricted media files, I came across an error where the file would begin to play with only sound and no video, and all other computer activities would freeze including the mouse and keyboard. After a few attempts to get the media files (.avi) to play with similar results, I found myself having to manually turn off the laptop by use of the power button (because nothing else was responding). Upon repowering up the laptop (a compaq, if brand makes any difference) I found the mouse and keyboard to be nonresponsive, not allowing me to log in. When I plugged in a USB mouse, it recognised the hardware and I was able to move it around on screen, but I did not have a compatible keyboard to plug in so I was inable to log in. Here I got the old Ubuntu installation disc (8.4) and booted the computer with it in the cd/dvd drive. The keyboard remained unresponsive and I could select nothing. I then downloaded the newest version of ubuntu and put it onto a disc, with that in the laptop's disc drive, my keyboard was responsive, but not to any effect which allowed me to fix the problem. And the enter button conveniently did not work if I tried to install the newer version of ubuntu. Is there any help for my dilemna? I would be very grateful for any advice you might be able to offer. Thank you m(_ _)m (Hardware)
