[ubuntu] no sound, sometimes?

http://ubuntuforums.org – Hello, completely new to Ubuntu and Linux and I'm having issues with my sound. I've done everything detailed here: http://www.unixmen.com/2012003-howto...lem-on-ubuntu/ I've installed the codecs package. I've installed pulse audio controls. And yes, I've made sure it's not muted anywhere. But, sound -does- work -sometimes-. Logging in/logging out plays a sound, the sounds available in the sound settings play. The issue is mainly with Empathy. No sound at all. I downloaded Pidgin sounds, thinking the Empathy sounds were just too soft or something, but even those make no sound, b (Hardware)

Audio not working in 12.10 29 weeks 6 days ago

I did a clean install of 12.10, when I open Sound Settings in gnome the only device in the list is "Dummy Output", and sound is not working.

Sound worked fine out of the box in 12.04

I ran alsamixer, it says my card is "HDA Intel", and chip is "Realtek ALC880".

Iv'e read a lot of People are having problems with the system sounds don't play. I can play sounds when going into ; System Settings\sound\ sound effect tab There are no options here to select sound themes or anything like that. This plays sounds and I can listen to music, youtube..

I'm running lubuntu (12.04) with Fluxbox window manager. Sound was working fine and and could view and hear all streaming content on Youtube and the news media sites. Decided to install VLC and its associated codecs so followed steps 10,12 and 13 on this page :

After re-booting I found that there was no sound.

Hello, I'm on a dell inspiron 1520 laptop, and all of a sudden the sound has stopped working. I tried repeatedly restarting, and the startup sound plays on the logon screen, but this is the only sound that will play.

I'm sure this is not due to it being muted, or other sound settings.

I tried the fixes found here, but no luck.

HI there fedora folks,

I am trying to play sounds via : sound applet on gnome taskbar, right click:sound prefs ,- sound vol is set via applet at say 45%, yet I cant hear the alert sounds Im pressing such as, glass & sonar,,is this common with pulse atm or a combo of that and my onboard realtek ac-97 sound chip ? :)))<thx anyone>

Can anyone tell me why the default "BEEP" plays when there is a different sound associated with an action? I have the Ubuntu sound profile set and when in the selection of sounds list, where you can choose what sound to associate with what action, the right sound plays.

Hello,

I had some recent issues with my MSN management in Pïdgin so I switch back to Empathy.

I have activated the sound notification in the preferences but no sound is emitted.

I think it is a software related issue because Quod Libet read my music accurately.

A solution ?

I have Karmic Koala.

Ubuntu 12.04 promised to add a brand new startup sound : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgAj_gJ-TXA.

But its not there in the final release. There's no sound at all! I now know how to restore the old sounds back thanks to this question : How to add the old startup sound (not login sound)?

But my question is, how to add the new (or any other custom) startup sound to Ubuntu?
