[ubuntu] No Low Volumes

http://ubuntuforums.org – I recently installed a clean copy of 12.04. So far everything has worked reasonably well, but I have a problem with the volume. Unless I have the volume at 1/4, or above I don't get any sound. Above that the sound control is quite precise, but If I want the volume to be any lower (which I often do), I have to adjust the volume on the individual application I am using. At one quarter the sound comes in relatively loud, all at once. This makes it thoroughly frustrating to adjust volume on a whim. (Hardware)

Somtimes some sound/movie/music on my Ubuntu_12.04 system is at a very low volume by itself. Henceforth I increase the volume of the sound output. I can use the following setting (see screenshot)

It seems therefore that pulseaudio is able to increase the volume beyond the maximum that appears possible by merely using the "increase-volume" buttons of the machine.

This is my first post :-)

Before logging in, I am able to adjust the volume. However once logged in, it does not work.

I have 2x 2.1 speakers connected to the computer where I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed. On the software side I've set all the volume controls to 100% with the alsamixer program.

While running XBMC, I can adjust the volume of the XBMC application itself. However, this volume is limited by the current system volume. For example, if the system volume is at 80% and XBMC is at 100%, I am effectively at 80% and cannot go higher.

I'm having an issue with my laptop. I'm using an HP Pavilion dv7-6135dx Entertainment PC. The volume control on the top panel won't adjust the volume of my sound. I can hear the sound.

How do you maximize sound volume in Gnome Shell under Ubuntu 11.10?

I have a Macbook, and my sound and volume keys generally work, but even if I use the volume keys to set volume to 100%, the sound is very low. However, if I open the Sound dialog, the "Output Volume" slider goes up to 150%, which allows me to comfortably hear sound.

I have a Lenovo Y510 with a 4.1 audio system that took a bit of setting up to get working correctly on 10.10. I had to add:

Code: options snd_hda_intel model=6stack-dell to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, which seemed to fix the issue. After upgrading to 11.04, the sound still works but the volume control and sound settings don't.

Is anyone else genuinely annoyed with the fact there is no volume lock option on this device? When I want to lower the volume with the rocker on say the lock screen, only the ringer volume goes down, and I have to click the gear icon to manually adjust the volume for the notificatons/media/etc.
