Hey everyone,
I have a major problem in ubuntu 11.10. Once playing with the compiz effects I got some graphic error. So i killed the x server by ctrl+alt+backspace. Then it went out and rebooted and when it reached the loading part, the white spots just move along the orange...but doesnt get booted.
I've been running 12.04 on my Lenovo laptop for one month now (updated from 11.04), and I have not had any significant problem until today. This morning, when I boot, I pass the Grub screen, then I get to the purple loading screen with dots as usual, then for some reason I got to the terminal login, with no GUI. startx gives me a black screen. Ctrl+F7-F8 didn't help either.
I was going to come back to Ubuntu. When I was using Ubuntu before, they were transitioning between Unity and Gnome I believe.
I downloaded the new Ubuntu 12.10 64b and loaded it to a usb to see, but it's not the interface I was wanting.
I also downloaded the new OpenSUSE which has Gnome 3.2.1 and that is the interface I love, and was wanting.
I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my computer and somewhere between running the updates and installing Unsettings, Cairo, and Ubuntu tweak; the system asks to restart.
After that there is no visual interface, just terminal. It asks me for my login information but without visual interface.
I have reinstalled a couple of times because I was getting a error after running the updates.
Here is my previous post explaining what has happened: Ubuntu is booting into terminal instead of GUI Interface
I was finally able to log in to the GUI Interface. I'm not exactly sure how I did it, I just fiddled around. One thing is weird, though. I'm only able to log in as guest, not as my actual name. I do have a password, but it keeps saying that it's incorrect.
I have a PPPoE connection on my Linux Machine (CentOS kernal 2.6.32) as a client, so that when I setup this connection, another virtual tunnel interface comes up, i.e., ppp0
This connection is setup over existing the physical interface eth0.
So say I accidentally hit CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+BACKSPACE and drop to the commandline from my nice clean engligntenment interface. How do I then get back?
I've tried startX, Xwindows, gnome but none of those commands seem to work. Any idea?
People new to Linux tend to react to any reference of the Linux shell terminal with fright. But there is nothing scary about our beloved shell terminal, or what we most commonly call the command-line interface (CLI) or simple the command-line. It is a very powerful place to interact with Linux. Every operating system has its own “command-line,” including Windows.
I think its 11.10, but that's part of my problem...total newb here...how the heck do I get back to my old user interface/desktop? I cant find anything in the new interface. I cant seem to figure out how to do much of anything in the new interface, I hate it. Any help would be appreciated!
