Gnome shell is the user interface for Gnome Desktop Environment, after the version 3.0 i.e they are based on GTK 3.0, written in C and Javascript. Ubuntu 11.10 beta version was released yesterday, and if you are an enthusiastic Ubuntu user, who love experiments; then probably you are running Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot), Right?
I was going to come back to Ubuntu. When I was using Ubuntu before, they were transitioning between Unity and Gnome I believe.
I downloaded the new Ubuntu 12.10 64b and loaded it to a usb to see, but it's not the interface I was wanting.
I also downloaded the new OpenSUSE which has Gnome 3.2.1 and that is the interface I love, and was wanting.
Unity is the default desktop in Ubuntu 11.10 (current stable version) or 12.04 LTS (upcoming, although beta 1 has released), so if you’re a new Ubuntu users and want to tweak some default settings (e.g fonts, icons, themes, behavior, launcher etc) of Unity Desktop, then try the Application called – MyUnity, very similar to what Gnome Tweak Tool does for Gnome Shell interface.

Ubuntu 12.04 comes with Unity, by default, based on Gnome 3.*, new features in Unity interface such as HUD seems to be cool but many people still doesn’t like Unity. Gnome Shell Interface is another great option for them. Since, both the interfaces are built on the top of Gnome 3.* – they have no compatibility problem at all.
Ubuntu 11.10 is based on Gnome 3 – both Unity and Gnome Shell interface works on the top of Gnome3 in 11.10 (it was not the case in earlier version such as 11.04 – that’s why Unity and Gnome shell were not compatible, anyway it’s not a problem anymore).
Love Ubuntu, but feel skeptical about 11.04′s new Unity interface? Try Lubuntu 11.04, an extremely lightweight alternative to the main branch of Ubuntu. You’ll find the menu-driven interface familiar and the resources hit remarkably low.Ubuntu 11.04, on my computer, runs better than Windows 7.
If you are Ubuntu users, especially Ubuntu Karmic Koala and newer, there is a good news for you. The popular tweaking software for Ubuntu, Ubuntu Tweak now reach version 0.53. The binary of this version of Ubuntu tweak can be obtained from here.
Mark Shuttleworth proudly announced last evening on his blog that the Unity interface introduced in the Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) release, will be much improved for the upcoming Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) operating system. Even if many Ubuntu users hate the new Ubuntu interface, Canonical's goal for the Unity shell is to make it ... (read more)
My reaction to the latest version of Ubuntu can be summed up in just three words: Far from awesome! That impression largely results from the switch to the new Unity desktop. Canonical, the developer of the Ubuntu Linux operating system, released version 11.04, also known as "Natty Narwhal," on April 28.
