I have two computers running Ubuntu on the local network connected to a router. The router (at 192.168.2.1) sees both systems (as well as my TV set, isn't technology wonderful!) and recognizes them by name "jcobban-laptop" and "linux-server". However if I try to use those names, for example in a ping, I get "unknown host".
ok so I'm on my laptop, running 12.04 trying to connect to a network share on another 12.04 PC, it's a desktop. They are both connected wirelessly. The name of the PC I'm trying to connect to is "kids-ubuntu", but when I ping it I get this:
Code:
$ ping kids-ubuntu
PING kids-ubuntu (69.16.143.25) 56(84) bytes of data.
Now that IP address is NOT a local one. What's up?
I upgraded to 12.10 yesterday and now I can't seem to resolve domain names. Connection Information seems to provide proper DNS server addresses from DHCP, but "ping" and "nslookup" both immediately fail with "unknown host" errors. I have tried external servers (google.com, ubuntu.com) as well as internal network host names, and none work.
Hello,
I have changed some settings on my DNS / DHCP config under Debian Lenny, and now when i try to ping some box it only works with long names. For example:
I've had this problem forever, but now it's become a work issue and not just personal.
I cannot ping any hostnames on our LAN
/etc/resolv.conf has both name servers configured correctly. I can ping the IP, but can't ping the hostname. I know it's something really simple, just can't put my finger on it.
Server Terminal: Fedora 11
Client Terminal: Opensuse 11.1
I had Dnsmasq server running for a while now and only thing I changed since on the DNS/DHCP server is running fwbuilder script at startup in init. The fwbuilder script is still the same script I have been using since setting up Dnsmasq. The client terminal is having trouble reaching the outside world.
Hi,
I am using Ubuntu 9.04 (x86-64).
My internet connection is not working, i've tried to fix it and the issue seems to be with DNS. I can ping google's IP, but i can ping it URL.
I have used the GUI network manager(from Gnome's equivalent of the Windows system tray), to add the DNS IP addresses to the IPv4 wired connection - that hasn't helped.
Hi all,
I have gone through many posts related to this issue,but my issue wasn't resolved hence creating new thread.
I am unable to ping localhost.

Code:
hosts = local, bind
.
