I own a acer 5720 laptop. I recently upgraded to karmic from jaunty. When I started working, I noticed some heat problems. Using lmsensors, I see core temperature increase constantly (raising even to 85 C), but acpi temperature does not suffer any change.
I found this issue:
ACPI: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored
I have been having this issue since I built this computer (2 years) so I am familiar with my issue but I am new to Ubuntu (four months). I keep hoping each new kernel will be my savior, but not so far. I am looking for a fix to this long standing issue...please read on.
Introduction
If you have a laptop with Linux, and would like to check the battery level, and temperature of the CPU, you may use acpi
If you find that acpi is not installed, on your system, use your package manager to install it
Using acpi to check battery level and CPU temperature
Once you have acpi installed on your system, you can use it to check different physical parameters on your Linux Lapt
Hi,
On Fedora 11 and Ubuntu 9.04 this laptop runs the fan loudly for no reason 20% of the time, defeating one of the main purposes of a laptop (quiet operation).
The problem does not happen when it runs the preloaded Windows Blista.
There is no ACPI/DSDT configuration that we've been able to find to control the fan.
In order for me to boot into Ubuntu 12.04 I have to add the parameter acpi=off in grub. Any other options as specified here do not allow me to boot into Ubuntu.
My question is simple, what does setting the paramter acpi=off actually do?
and more importantly does repeatedly booting with acpi=off damage or harm the computer in anyway ?

Fido
Sometimes my computer shuts down unexpectedly, usually when some process is taxing the CPU.
I'm using arch full upgrade in testing and kde-unstable but the problem was present before upgrade to testing) and I currently have a problem with the ACPI Temperature monitor, which leads to a malfunctioning FAN.After resuming a KDE suspended session I've noticed that the FAN didn't work at all, even if the CPU was heavily occupied.
I am so close to having karmic working perfectly on this laptop. The only thing isn't working is the fan. It is currently on at the lowest speed and switches off if I suspend.
I wish I could do one of the following:
1. Turn the fan on full - I don't care how loud it is, anything is better than Vista.
Greetings Ubuntu Forum-ers!
I'm having a bit of trouble with my Dell 640m laptop running Jaunty. Basically Ubuntu refuses to run in either LiveCD or installed mode if ACPI is on. Just to clarify, I can run it fine if I include acpi=off at boot. With ACPI on, the computer restarts itself as soon as I reach the login page.
