when I log in as the default user on mu 12.04 system, the title "Ubuntu Desktop" appears on the left side of the panel at the top of my screen and I can access some special menus there also, but when I log in with my primary account which I have customized in various ways, the left side of the panel just stays empty, so I am just trying to narrow down what configuration settings I may ha
Hi all, I'm trying to get my USB2VGA adapter working using the SISUSB driver and having some problem. Using the config below, I got the SIS monitor to turn on, but it turns on starting its own gnome-session and once I move the mouse over, it gets stuck there and I can not bring it back to the main screen.
I've this situation/hardware on my desktop PC:
Ubuntu Linux Oneiric 11.10 (32 bit)
Monitor Asus VW222s (22'')
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G92 [GeForce 8800 GS] (rev a2)
NVIDIA Driver Version: 280.13
I've no problem with my actual configuration and I can achieve 1680x1050 as expected.
What's the problem then?

Hi *
When I use two monitors, the desktop area changes to incorporate the display areas of the two monitors. When I have a large number of icons on the desktop in this configuration, I encounter the problem of having the icons run outside of the displayed area. The icons become accessible only through the use of Nautilus etc.
Is there some way to address this?
I was running Linux Mint 10 (Julia) and I had it set up pretty nicely with a 3x3 desktop expo and loved it. Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 11.10 and tried to set up a similar configuration with CCSM, but it would either show the wrong number of desktops, show the correct number but without windows, or briefly show the correct form and then immediately disappear.
Hi everyone.
My desktop icons move around the desktop as if they had a mind of their own. I prefer to keep everything on my desktop, so it has many icons until I clean it up and archive old projects.
But, the icons never stay where I put them!!
I would like to set up a guest account on my Ubuntu so that anyone could log in (no password) and browse the Internet. But the guest user should not be able to modify desktop configuration (remove desktop icons, change theme, and so on).
Is it possible? On one hand I need write permissions (browser cache), on the other - if write permissions to home dir are given, anything may get broken.
Hello--high tech savvy user here but relatively new to linux and ubuntu. I'm using VCXSRV, version 1.12.99.0 (the latest version as of yesterday) to do remote login (remote desktop) from a Windows 7 laptop to a Ubuntu 12.04 workstation using a VPN connection using XDMCP. Connection is functional, the desktop appears, and I can see desktop icons of my ubuntu workstation remotely on my laptop.
