the windows XP 32-bit on my laptop recently died and I want to install linux now.
The problem is the laptop has no cd or floppy drive anymore and is not able to boot from USB.
I borrowed a "bridge" from a friend, which allows me to connect the hard drive to the USB-port of my other laptop(win 7 64bit) which then recognizes it as a hard drive.
How can I get a bootable OS on this hard drive?
I have
Hi, firstly sorry if this is in the wrong place, or the title didn't make any sense, it's a hard problem to be concise about.
So, the problem is this: my cousin dropped her laptop (I think while it was on), and after that her Windows 7 installation wouldn't work. It got as far as the splash screen, and that was all.
My laptop hard disk got crashed. But until I replace I want to do my home works. So I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on 16GB Kingston DT101 G2 pen drive.
My question is, using my pen drive as my regular disk for 1 or 2 weeks is that OK ? Will I get any problems in my pen drive? After I replace my hard disk can I use that pen drive as normal ( just assume I will use my laptop at least 12 hours per day).
Some time ago I did something wrong trying to make a bootable USB using my external hard drive. It had to be formatted, but I didn't proceed the operation (when I got, what was going to happen). Now I still have the data on the hard drive -- when I go to Properties, I see 440Gb used and 60 Gb free space -- but I can't reach it.
Hi guys,
So I was looking into how to install Windows 7 from an external USB hard drive. I found a few different programs that allow you to do this by extracting the Windows 7 image file to the external hard drive in such a way that when you boot the computer up, it will boot from the external hard drive and bring you to the Windows 7 installation process.
Recently, I upgraded the RAM and hard drive on my Early 2008 Macbook to improve the performance. Rather than throw away the old hard drive, I bought an enclosure for it to turn it into an external hard drive, and, since all the data was migrated to my new drive, I decided to install Ubuntu on it for funsies (note: I am a near-total Ubuntu n00b).
I installed 12.10 using the windows installer.
My external USB hard drive was working fine until today.
Using
sudo lshw
I see my USB printer with information about the model and manufacturer. I don't see anything that looks like the external hard drive.
I've tried searching on USB external hard drive won't mount and find nothing that seem relevant or usable at my skill level.
Hey all,
I'm looking to see what everyone's experience is installing 11.10 is on an external hard drive and booting to it on a laptop. I'm looking to install the OS on an external drive for my work laptop and boot to it to make some of my admin tasks easier. Wasn't sure if I should get an AC powered drive or if a USB powered one would be acceptable.
I have an old 2.5" IDE hard drive taking off Acer Ferrari 4000. I set a password for the hard-drive in BIOS. Laptop broke now I have only the hard drive - I remember the password.
Yet, I tried putting the hard-drive to another laptop (Thinkpad A21m) but it didn't recognize the hard-drive and complained about "no hard drive found".
