[ubuntu] install Ubuntu in unallocated Win 7 partition.

http://ubuntuforums.org – Hi, This seems like it should be pretty simple but I am having problems determining Windows partition .vs Linux partition. I have 350Gb of unallocated space on my hard drive & would like to install Ubuntu there. From what I have read Ubuntu prefers to be in charge of the partitioning for GRUB. It looks like /dev/sda1 & sda2 are to be partitioned ntfs. Can I allocate (thru Windows) the 350GB as Logical ntfs partition & point to that space during the Ubuntu install? Or do I use GParted to carve up the 350GB of unallocated space (either during the install or beforehand)? (Hardware)

I made a miscalculation on my Ubuntu install and now need more space for my Windows (NTFS) partition (sda2). The problem is that I allocated ~ 100GiB to what I thought would be a shared media storage directory; this was placed in an extended partition (sda4), comprised of ~ 7GiB in a swap file (sda5) and ~ 100GiB in an ext4 storage partition (sda6), respectively.

First, the phrase "unallocated filesystem" is an oxymoron -- unallocated space is just that: unallocated (unused). You can't put a filesystem in unallocated space.

Hello everyone, I am having big troubles trying to install windows 7 and suse 11.1 on the same PC

I never had problem when using XP, what I usually did was: 1) Install XP first, leaving during the disk partitioning an unallocated space for the linux installation

I had the idea to dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu and what I did was the following:

Made a clean install of win 7 using all of my hard drive, next I used the ubuntu live cd and gparted to partition my drive to be the following:

/dev/sda1 ext4 20GB (Linux root) /dev/sda2 ntfs 100GB(Win7) /dev/sda3 ext4 350GB(Home) /dev/sda4 extended 4GB(swap)

So my disk ended up being partitioned like this:

| System reserved (100MB) | Windows 7 (NTFS, 500GB) | Ubuntu (ext4, 100GB) | Swap (4GB) | Unallocated Space (400GB) |

Unfortunately, the unallocated space is not next to ext4 or NTFS partitions.

Now I want to allocate 200GB to the Windows 7 ntfs partition, the other 200GB to the Ubuntu partitions.

I am attempting, for possibly the hundredth time, to install a variant of linux (Ubuntu) onto my computer (Compaq Presario C57) and I'm having a lot of difficulty.

First thing I did was shrink my windows partition to free up some space, which now appears as 'Unallocated Space' with a black stripe across it in Disk Management.

I have windows sda2 and then, next to it, extended partition with ubuntu sda6. Can I reallocate some ubuntu's free space to sda2? I know I can boot from livecd gparted and cut some GB from sda6, but then unallocated space will be after sda6 and not before, am I right? Is it possible to add unallocated space to sda2 or merge is not possible due to partitions position?

Ihave ubuntu 11.10 on 1 TB hard drive /home is seperate 890 GB partition swap is 8GB and boot is 9 GB now afrter shrinking /home and moving swap I have unallocated 23 GB between / boot and swap. I need to expand boot to the unallocated space as am getting low disk space warning in boot partition as there is only 796 MB unused in that partition.

Before I started this, I went into Windows 8 and reduced it's size to allow roughly 10GB of unallocated data. I want to increase Ubuntu 12.10's partition to fill that void.

I ran Ubuntu (Trial) from my CD as told to in multiple tutorials and ran GParted.
