[ubuntu] install proprietary driver downloaded from nvidia

http://ubuntuforums.org – My graphics card is an NVidia GeForce 6100. I have got Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit. I have downloaded the Linux driver, but when I run it, it says I have got to disable X. I have used stop commands for gdm, which it doesn't recognise, and lightdm, which turns the display off!! (and the system!) It is also not included with the OS. I have tried downloading the newest driver, but can't install it as it tells me to shut down the X server: I have tried: CTRL + ALT + F1 init sudo lightdm stop All I get is Monitor Signal Out Of Range, and I can't get out of it! I have got a similar thread but I was advi (Hardware)
