[ubuntu] Imaging with dd

http://ubuntuforums.org – If I Image a drive with the likes of dd (or anything else if someone can recommend something) will that image include the data of deleted files etc. The sort of thing that one would look to recover with testdisk recovery software? I want to image a disk as I want to do a fresh install on it. But I want to at a later point in time also recover anything I can that was ever on that drive. My reasons for this are complicated and involve complex family matters. So want copy not just the current data but all pre-existing data. If so are specific parameters that need to be used? (Hardware)

I had FOUR NTFS partitions on my drive. One on which Windows 7 was installed (C Drive) and the other contained my data (D Drive) (E Drive) (F drive) .

During Ubuntu installation I chose to install Ubuntu and erase my existing OS. When Ubuntu was installed, I was shocked to see no partition. All my data was gone.

I have a 2T usb drive I wanted to write an image of my current desktop hard drive 200 GB to a directory on the 2T usb drive

UNFORTUNATELY

The image was writen to the usb drive and anything else is GONE

i have tried various tools (just reading ) the drive but the tools only sees the 200Gb drive files ans nothing else

You could try 'testdisk'  It's in extra and is also available on the SystemRescueCD.  'testdisk' is a tool to recover lost partitions, but I wouldn't hold much hope for it to be successful for you.Included with testdisk is 'photorec'.  It's a file recovery tool.  It ignores the filesystem and tries to recover the data recorded.

Hello everybody, i got two questions, both involve data recovery.

my brother has deleted his partition table of an windows NTFS harddisk, but has done nothing more. i wonder what is the best software for

get the partition table back. i would like a linux software which can cope with as much file systems as possible. if it is not possible to get back the partition table.

Alright Here is the deal.

A co worker accidentally deleted his external hard drive. There isn't anything important on it thankfully as this is just a media storage devise. It would be nice to be able to recover the data that is on it to save time in rebuilding the libraries and such.
