[ubuntu] How to set up the wi-fi using a wired Ethernet cable?

http://ubuntuforums.org – Hi, I am using Ubuntu and need to set up the wi-fi. My current internet connection is via a wired ethernet cable without a Modem. But in almost all the cases of setting up process they say,"Connect the wire from the modem to the router.", while setting up the router. So in my case where I dont have a modem, so do I just need to connect my ethernet wire to the router while setting up? Secondly , will all the settings will be lost when the router will be rebooted? (Hardware)

I just bought a TRENDNET TDM C4000 (=modem/ wiredrouter) and got it working. If I connect my computer with through the ethernet port directly, the internet will work. However, when I try connecting the ends of the ethernet cable on the modem and my wireless router, it's not transmitting. I know I set up the wireless router correctly because it worked with my previous modem.

Internet Connection:- DSL 4MB/4MB (up and down) Static IP (for home use) --------------

Wiring connection: PC -> Router -> Modem -> ISP

Modem and router are supplied by ISP.

Modem: Comtrend Model SR-2010 (4 wire)

The modem is provided with 4 sockets, only one being used and connected to the router.

So the setup looks like this:

There is a main WLAN-router/modem which is connected to the internet and serves the lower floor with WLAN. Now upstairs I have a second WLAN-router/modem (I will call it router two from now on). A normal ethernet cable is plugged in in router two in one of the four ethernet ports and also in one of the four ethernet ports in router one.

OK So I moved today and had to purchase a new wireless router. Without changing any setting I connected using WiCd wirelessly from my last residence.

I now purchased a Linksys WRT160N wireless router to use however cant connect to that wired or wireless. well let me specify, WiCd states its connected but no internet connection is found in firefox.

I currently have an Airport Extreme connected directly to my cable modem but have been wondering if I should actually connect direct to my proxy server first. The reason I am asking is because I run multiple web servers for web hosting and I have a proxy server setup that directs traffic to the appropriate computer based on domain names.

I get my internet from a cable modem thru Comcast. My house has a smart panel with 8 LAN ports, each going to the 8 rooms in my house. The cable modem links directly to an 8-port hub which allows 8 lines to feed each of the 8 ports in the house's smart panel... so every room has a live ethernet wall jack.

In room #1, I have a netgear wifi router connected to the wall jack.

Hi,I have ADSL Modem Huawei SmartAX MT882 which has Ethernet as well as USB cable to connect internet.  For so long I have been using this Modem using Ethernet cable.

I would like to connect an android phone/tablet to my Ubuntu pc in my car.

Having a spare router I though of making a local wireless network. All the info on the net is about turning the spare router into an access point of a existing Ethernet connection.

Home Net Topology

ISP/WAN > Modem > Router (linksys) >Router(CISCO 851W) > (serial cable) 2008 R2

I have the loopback cable connected from my server to the CISCO router. The router is connected to the router in the office with a crossover cable. It is connected to Lan port 4 (Linksys) and the cable is plugged in to the WAN port(CISCO).
