I have a number of production servers that started off as gnome-based, but a couple of years ago I installed lxde and lxdm, and encouraged users to switch (the resource use of gnome-3 is unsustainable for these systems). However this has left the login manager as gdm (unlike the lxde spin, where it is lxdm).
I just upgraded to KDE 4.8 via ppa. Now when I want to login at the login screen, KDE does not accept my password anymore. But I can login in terminal/console.
What can I do?
Can I start the desktop gui at least from Konsole? But how? I don't know the console command.
Please, help!
Hi,
I have wubi installed. It was working sluggish so I rebooted. Now, in the login screen I get a message:Install problem
The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager
have not been installed correctly.
Please contact your computer administrator
And it is impossible to login. I can always login in console mode as root (recovery).
I was working normally and the GUI just failed, all I could still see were any open windows.
I rebooted the machine from tty1 and now I can't login anymore under my normal user accounts.
I enter my credentials, it appears to login, and immediately goes back to the login screen.
Note that under tty1 I can still login with my user account and do everything.
Background:
I was trying to solve a problem I had with Libreoffice and installed/uninstalled a couple of packages (it is a fresh install of 12.10 Quantal). I don't know if it is related but there is now a long pause after the login screen, before showing the desktop.
Hello, I had my laptop set up to allow logging in with an AD account using winbind and samba. I had cached password login working too. After I upgraded from 13 to 14, now I cannot login to the gdm (xfce) using my AD account, but I CAN login using it on a text console, OR I can login with a local account and su to the AD account.
I was upgrading software on my mother's laptop remotely (over ssh) and she misunderstood me and turned it off during the process. Now she cannot enter the system. After entering her password in the GDM login screen she's got something like
Code:
Authentication failure
She was able to log in in the console and finished the upgrade but still cannot pass by the GDM login screen.
