I have auto login enabled, and I just upgraded to 11.04. When I boot, I get a message saying that I don't have the hardware required to run Unity, so I should choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen. The problem is that auto login bypasses the login screen, and I can't disable auto login via the normal route since I can't start xwindows.
Here is the situation. Yesterday I installed 11.2, gnome, on a desktop box, all seemed to go well. I shut down at night to save power. Login the next day (today), as user, fails silently. Login screen shows full name, I enter pw, and screen goes black as tho it is getting ready to start the desktop. Then the login screen comes back.
I can login as root. Pw's are NOT the same.

My computer crashed earlier this evening, I think it was somewhat overheated and shut itself down.
After this, I can no longer log into Ubuntu.
hello,
i've tried to install opensuse 11.2, and i got a really annoying problem:
after the installation ends, and then the automatic configuration ends, i get a black screen for very very long time.
if i restart my PC, then i get to a text screen with lots of failures on the list, and in the end:
linux-'something' login:
Hi,
Is there a way to login terminal before the regular login? Reason, I noticed this NVIDIA driver for the Quadro FX 3400 states in the read me file that I need to shut down xorg and enter terminal to install the driver. I ran shut sudo lightdm to shut down my display and my screen goes blank. I can type all day put it's not the terminal.
So when ever I boot up, I get the boot logo at a pretty low resolution, and when the login screen apears I get a balck screen and my TV says "mode not suported" so I hit Ctrl+Alt+(-) or (+) and the login screen pops up, everything works fine, my nvidia driver is installed and didnt do that before installing driver....so how do i fix that

Nearly every time I bootup my Ubuntu I come to the login screen. But instead of showing me the wallpaper from selected account, I just see the default purple background with those white dots on it.
On my FC 17-65 XFCE Spin system with noveau video driver, the following problem has cropped up:
I boot and login as an ordinary user. The XFCE desktop appears. I click the mouse on something and the desktop vanishes. Instead of the desktop I see the printing from the last text boot screen. Usually the login screen reappears, but sometimes I just stay stalled on the text screen.
New install of 12.04.1 and the user established during install cannot login.
I was able to create an new user by entering the system as guest. Ubuntu accepted the sudo password of the first user to establish the new user; but I cannot login as the user established during install. The newly created user does have admin permission and I can login using that user and do sudo stuff.
