http://ubuntuforums.org – So I installed the google talk plugin about a month or two ago. Last week I noticed that the updates program wouldn't open. I tried updating from the terminal. Same thing happened. The error message I got from both the update application and the terminal: "E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/dl.google.com_linux_talkplugin_deb_dists_stable_ma in_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. " Ubuntu software center crashes before it even opens, as well. And I do think they are related, though I might be wrong. (Hardware)

I recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 in my PC and all efforts to update the system have not been successful.the Ubuntu software center cannot open and every time i open the package manager i get an error message.

Hi,

After opening the Ubuntu Software Center, the program freezes before getting past the initial loading screen, before crashing.

Whenever I open Update Manager, the following message is displayed:

Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: E:Encountered a section with no Package: header E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.c

When I try to open the software center (Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit) it will flash open, load for maybe 1-2 seconds, and then close.

When i try using:

sudo apt-get purge software center sudo apt-get install sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade

I get this within the terminal:

Reading package lists...

When I try to upgrade I receive the following message:

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_main_i18n_Translation-en E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

The upgrade program crashes out.

Hi Everyone,

To start, I have Ubuntu 12.10 x64.

So I have googled this problem many times, and I honestly don't think there is a solution to this. Anyways, I got this error:

"An error occurred, Please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong.

Whenever I opened software center and update manager,I got this error message.

E:Encountered a section with no Package:header E:Problem with Mergelist /var/lib/apt/lists/mm.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_main_i18n_Translation-en E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I can't install software and update even from terminal.If anyone know,help me please.

Something happened so the packagemannager will not update.

The error message is

What to do?
