[ubuntu] getting rid of dual booting

http://ubuntuforums.org – I wanted to set up Ubuntu on an external usb hard drive. So I did that. Got it all installed on the external drive with a boot CD, but it set it up as a dual boot on my computer. Now if I don't have my external drive plugged in I get an error on boot up so I cant even load windows. What I wanted was to set my pc to search for a usb to boot from first, and if their was one it would boot ubuntu from it, and if it's not plugged in then boot from the internal drive (windows) as normally. So I guess I messed up my boot settings on my internal drive. I was hoping by installing Ubuntu on the ex (Hardware)

Hi, I am new to linux and this is my first linux installation.

I installed fedora 15 on an external hard drive attached to my Windows laptop and in doing so accidentally created a boot manager the external drive. The laptop in question has windows on it which I can access via the dual boot menu that sits on the external hard drive.

I have a lenovo ideapad u350 with external USB DVD drive and HDD (Samsung) (I do not want to overwrite the internal hard drive which has wondows 7) While booting from the DVD drive with OpenSuse 11.2, the booting is erratic. Once in a while it just hangs (especially if I reboot from windows without powering off the laptop)

When I installed Ubuntu onto my second harddrive, that had Crunchbang on it, I overwrote Crunchbang and could no longer boot my machine.

So, Boot Repair Disk to the rescue...AND I got Windows back up and booting, but without a dual-boot.

How do I get Ubuntu back into the boot-up list? Do I wipe the Ubuntu drive and start over?

Hey, I recently installed Ubuntu on my an external hard drive connected to my laptop. Now, when I boot plugged into that HDD, it is fine, but when I unplug it and try to boot, it has a grub error and I cannot boot Windows.. Can anyone help me?

My problem isn't actually in Linux, but most people here seem to be pretty knowledgeable about computers as well, so I figured I'd ask.

I installed Linux mint on an external hard drive and everything was going fine. I next wanted to test my windows to make sure it still worked. I set the Windows boot manager as the default boot option in the bios. Once I confirmed Windows was still working on my internal hard drive, I went back and to the bios to change the boot priority to the external drive with Linux.

When I plug an eSATA cable into the external eSATA port that is attached to my motherboard (Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3), the internal SATA drive that my root partition is on is seemingly disconnected (most all programs begin to crash immediately). If I attempt to boot into Ubuntu's recovery mode with the cable plugged in, it fails after trying to find the internal drive by UUID.

So I was looking into how to install Windows 7 from an external USB hard drive. I found a few different programs that allow you to do this by extracting the Windows 7 image file to the external hard drive in such a way that when you boot the computer up, it will boot from the external hard drive and bring you to the Windows 7 installation process.
