My Ubuntu 10.10 system suddenly froze/crashed for no reason and I had to hard reboot my computer. Surprisingly it doesn't load anymore and stay stuck on a grub rescue prompt after an "unknown filesystem" message.
I have dual boot with Window 7 And Ubuntu 11.10.

Hi,
I'm a pretty new Ubuntu user, and I can't figure out what to do from searching other threads.
Anyway, here's my situation:
I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed on a partition, and OSX 10.7 on another, and it worked great. Then after I installed 10.8, my Ubuntu partition no longer worked.
My computer has (had) a dual boot of Ubuntu Precise and Windows 7. Recently, when I started the computer, grub gave me an error saying "Unknown filesystem", and sent me to grub rescue. I searched for solutions to this, and found this answer: Unknown filesystem error: grub rescue.
I had Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.1 installed in my intel i3 4gig DDR Sony Vaio E-series laptop. Both operating system were working fine. Only problem that I used to have was the sound didn't use to play when I boot through Ubuntu. Due to that, I formatted the corresponding drive from Windows in which there was Ubuntu installed.
F12 Live CD boots and runs fine. I installed to hard drive and now get:
Grub loading.
error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue> _
(it is hung - I cannot type any commands here)
I think I somehow have to use root and setup but don't remember and can't find specifics
I installed Ubuntu successfully by using acpi=off and nolapic. When I booted into the installed operating system all that the screen showed was several multi colored bars(This must have been my 10,000th installation attempt.)
I decided to get rid of Ubuntu by simply deleting the partition and re partitioning it as a blank drive.
i have installed ubuntu inside windows and then afterwords i installed fedora 16...all time during start up its show os selection by grub loader but after i did some partition on windows its shows error:unknown filesystem.enterting rescue mode..
I bought a new computer a couple of weeks ago and installed Ubuntu from a book DVD. Everything went fine and I was happily using Ubuntu until I found out that it was the 32 bit version. I want to use the 64 bit version since I just spent the money to replace my old computer with a 64 bit system. I created a DVD with the 64 bit ISO from the Ubuntu site and installed that.
