I recently installed 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS on my Inspiron 1720 laptop as a dual boot with Windows 7. When I boot up Ubuntu, it gets to the log in screen just fine but after logging in it gets stuck with the default desktop background display only. I can move the curser around but i can't get any response from it.
I installed 12.04 using WUBI on a working W7 64bit system.
both KB and mouse work perfect during the BIOS boot, and on the bootmgr, I can select Windows 7 or Ubuntu to load.
Once I select Ubuntu, the KB and mouse seem to loose their power (light on the mouse and Numlock leds go off)
After couple of seconds, the screen gets blurry.
Hey, I'm really new to Ubuntu and when I boot it up (I am dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu) I get to the log in screen and everything locks up. I can't move the mouse or type. I have tried to get to the text login but as I cannot use my keyboard when it's locked up that wont work. Any ideas?
thanks ahead of time.

I installed ubuntu on my T500 laptop a couple of days ago and everything was working fine. Today I plugged a usb keyboard and mouse directly into 2 of the usb ports. I then powered up. Everything was fine during the boot process I used the usb keyboard to select the boot option first in the windows - ubuntu choice and then in grub to move between the options and select one.
So I have a Lenovo ideapad s405 that came with Windows 8 and uefi. I now have it dual booting with win 8 and Ubuntu 12.10. Only issue Im running into and I cannot resolve for the life of me is making the screen brighter in Ubuntu. When I boot into Win 8 the screen is very bright. When I boot into Ubuntu it is very dim even though the brightness setting is all the way up.
Haven't used Ubuntu for the past couple releases and just installed it again. After some initial issues I've got it installed.
Now, however, sometimes my mouse doesn't work. And it's strange, because I'm always able to click launchers in the Unity dock, as well as use Dash, but any time I want to click/right click the desktop, click on a button in a window, it doesn't work.
I just equipped my new laptop with Ubuntu, and for some reason it keeps freezing very shortly after booting the system!
I can move the mouse around, but it doesn't change the pointer from the mode it was when it froze, for example if I was about to click a type-box before freeze, it stays in the text-marker thingy, no matter where I move it.
Never had this problem on my old laptop, (used Ubuntu
Hi everyone.
I am a new convert to Linux. Just set up an Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop pc (no dual boot, bye bye windows). This going pretty smoothly so far. One or two problems with scanner etc but nothing major.
However I also want to put Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop as a dual boot with windows 7.
