When copying large (or even files of a few KB) to an sd card from ubuntu 10.10, the files appear to be there but when i access the card from another device, the files are either missing or 0 bytes in size.
I suspect that the problem is that it takes time for the files to copy to the card and I'm taking it out too soon but there is no progress bar - im just doing it from cmd line.

cp gets the job done but it would be nice if it had a little more feedback. Are there any utilities out there that do this? Personally, my ideal feedback would be a progress bar. But, I would take something as basic as output listing the files being copied as they are completed.
Thanks!
When i copy files to the Android phone, they are copied to some cache, but they aren't written. I don't like it, because i don't know what is done.
I've tried these methods:
copying via thunar file manager
using cp src dst command
using rsync -aP src dst
I have to use sync to write data. I don't like it, because i can't see progress when copying large amount of data (using thunar, rsync).
Hey Guys,I have posted this under 'Newbie Corner' because I'm really not sure where this should go. I am using Gnome 3.6 with GNOME Shell. When I copy a large file from one device to another (say, my SSD to a USB flash drive) I get the copy dialog box with the progress bar. This progress bar jumps to about 98%-99% and stays until the file is finished writing to the disk.
I am currently trying to use Ubuntu 9.04 live CD (it's what I had when my computer took a dump) to copy some Windows files from an old drive to a new drive. I'm using cp -Rvf source dest. The issue I'm having is that during copying, the process will hang on files of varying file extensions (.exe, .cat, .url).
Hi,
I'm updating the Linux on my computer. I've already copied the files and folders in my home directory (audio, video, documents, pictures, and others).
I've also made a copy of the wifi passwords saved on my computer (etc/NetworkManager/system-connections).
What other files or folders should I be copying before I do a fresh install?
Thanks.
On my windows machine I have a few utilities which makes it easy to copy/move large numbers of files from and to different directories, Teracopy is the one I use most.
So, I'm finding tons of nifty little bash scripts, scp tips, rsync tips, etc etc for copying one file to a destination while showing the progress of that copy, however, how would I go about doing this for a directory with sub-directories (cp with -r flag)
