For years, Ubuntu’s default email client was Evolution. Then, last year, Canonical switched to Mozilla Thunderbird. But now recent doubts over the future of Thunderbird — most of them pretty speculative — have spawned worries that Thunderbird might, in its turn, disappear from Ubuntu. Will it? And more importantly, would it really matter to many people?
Mozilla officially released the Mozilla Thunderbird 15.0.1 email and RSS client to the world on September 10th, 2012, and now it is available in Ubuntu OSes.
Thanks to Canonical, Mozilla Thunderbird 15.0.1 has just arrived on the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
The new version only fixes a couple of problems, reported in two different Launchpad bugs, #1049428 a

With the news that Mozilla is apparently putting Thunderbird into maintenance mode, with future innovations to be up to the community, it seems that the writing is on the wall for Thunderbird.
Thunderbird has always been my email client of choice, but I have also been frustrated at the path of development taken by Mozilla.

Mozilla has announced a while ago that the development of thunderbird will cease in the near future, but, for now, they are adding quite a lot of new stuff.

Thunderbird continually crashes on startup. I've heard nothing back via email from Mozilla. Have tried reinstalling to no avail.
