[ubuntu] Desktop switcher obliterates panels

http://ubuntuforums.org – Hi, everyone, I'm in the process of finalizing an install of Precice Pangolin (12.04.1 LTS) on my laptop. I'm running the Gnome Classic desktop manager. My problem is that the desktop switcher (bottom right hand corner) always reverts back to a 2x2 layout after a reboot. When I right-click and change it to one row of 8 workspaces (as I was used to in my previous Karmic distro on that same machine) my top and bottom panels disappear, and the Ctrl-Alt-Arrow keys let me select 4 empty desktops from a 2x2 grid. And that's it - no way out except to go into a text mode console and reboot. W (Hardware)

So I booted my computer up this morning, logged in, and found that both the top and the bottom panels were gone. My desktop background is still there, but the panels aren't. When I do open a window and minimize it, it goes to nowhere.

I am running Xfce4 with compiz-fusion.  I don't usually use a workspace switcher, but I put one in my panel -- just for you.  With my Intel 915, it works just as I would expect it to.  The panel appears on all desktops, and the switcher tracks the desktop I am on.  It also shows open windows on the other workspaces.As I said, I usually don;t use the switcher.  I have

Under Compiz :: General Options :: Desktop Size I already have 2x2 layout of 4 virtual desktops setup, as in screenshot.

However if you notice as in the switcher app parked in the top left corner, only one desktop shows, and indeed only one is available to send windows to or hover over to.

Right-clicking that docked switcher to "Add a workspace" doesn't behave right anymore.

After upgrading to 12.04 Gnome Classic amd64,every time I log on a new additional blank panel appears on the top and bottom panels - which I delete every time. In addition, the default panel applets are duplicated in the original panels.

Also the panels in the second screen are empty (in addition to the wallpaper being hidden).

I'm trying to get GNOME working the way I'm used to on other machines. I have my preferences set so there are 4 workspaces and the workspace switcher in the bottom panel shows 4 workspaces. When I click on any of them then I go to that workspace, and that all makes sense.

I have ALT-1, ALT-2, etc in my keyboard shortcuts set to 'switch to workspace 1', 'switch to workspace 2' etc.

I'm using 12.04.

When using the desktop switcher keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+ALT + ARROWKEY), I noticed that if you are on a desktop and close all the windows then the shortcuts don't work. This happens when you are not on the first desktop.

To replicate, go to a secondary desktop, open any window. Notice here that the shortcuts work. Now, close the window and try using the shortcuts.

In older versions of Ubuntu with Compiz, I liked using Super + arrow key (up, down, left, right) to immediately go to a different desktop wall. I set up the same shortcut keys in Ubuntu 12.04 with CompizConfig Settings Manager, but now I must press the Enter key to commit the desktop wall choice.
