I just gave up trying to do it, because I couldn't make it work despite an hour or so of effort. Can someone please walk me through the process of sharing the Internet connection of an Ubuntu 9.10 machine with a Windows XP client, using a Cat5 crossover cable between the host and client?
I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell Mini 1012.
It seems to be running fine but I am unable to get my wireless card working?
I even plugged in my Ethernet cable and could not get an internet connection?
Does anyone have any ideas or a how-to? I can't wait to use the new O/S but would like to have internet too! :-)
I want to add a crossover to my network toolbox. Aside from an actual an actual crossover cable, I like the idea of an adapter (figure 1).
I'm running 12.04. Every time I plug the ethernet cable into a router (and I've tried multiple routers) the wired connection connects, then quickly disconnects. It continues to do this, cycling through connected and disconnected.
Wireless connection works completely fine. Regardless of if I have the wireless adapter on or off, if I've plugged in the ethernet cable the cycling begins.
Hi anyone can tell me how to configure my ethernet card to work. My pc only works wirelessly. I don't know what kind of ethernet card is installed. I have Ubuntu 10.4 on a dell pc 1ghz, 20ghd, 512mb.

Problem: No Ethernet
Platform: Dell Lattitude D600 (see output below)
OS: Fedora 17
Symptoms:
Windows XP Ethernet worked.
Fedora 17 i386 network install via the wireless network.
Obviously the wireless card was recognized and installed during the CD boot but I have never been able to get Ethernet to work.
During install eth0 is renamed to em1 (not sure what this is about)

Internet via Wifi disconnects when I connet ethernet cable to connect a ethernet device?Wifi is configured for DHCP and connected with internet - works okay.
If I connect ethernet cable with computer card, static IP configured to connects an ethernet device, it stops internet access. I remove cable insternet start working again.
I am setting up this on Latitude D830.
I have a dell latitude 2100 running ubuntu 11.1. Wireless internet works fine on it but wired connections do not. When I plug a ethernet cord in, it keeps on saying wired connection connected followed by disconnected. When I check the ethernet connection in the network part of system settings, it also keeps rapidly changing to on/off.
I am trying Ubuntu on a trial basis to see if I think I could use it in place of Windows. One of the things I can do in Windows is connect my XP laptop thru a wireless access point which is connected by ethernet cable to my desktop, which is set to share its internet connection. The desktop connects to the internet by dialup.
