http://ubuntuforums.org – Hi everyone, A while back I was using my computer playing videogames and it just randomly shut off. Not knowing why it shut off I turned it back on and it worked great. Slowly over time this problem became worse and worse, playing videogames, it would shut off. After it happening a handful of times, found out that my computer was overheating and it was shutting off because of too much heat. Last week I went to turn my computer on, after it being off all night, and when I hit the power button there was nothing, No fans spinning, no noises, nothing. I hit it a few more times and nothing (Hardware)

I'm a new user to Ubuntu. While I haven't had many issues with the OS since I've installed it, I have had one odd problem. Whenever I shut my computer down and later turn it back on, the power button lights up and the machine appears to be on but nothing happens, my screen shows no signal. I've been having to hard boot it off and then turn it back on again to get my computer to actually work.

From Ubuntu 11.10, I installed Gnome 3 Shell on my desktop computer. I studied it for awhile, and then looked for the button to close the shell, but found only a suspend button. I clicked it and it shut everything down, but it left the computer still on. I didn't know the resume procedure, so I turned off the power for several seconds to reboot.

Hi, I'm using ubuntu 12.04 and Ijust got the error in the title. I waited through it and it eventually brought me to my log in screen, I had shut the screen, and the brightness was low and my cursor was extremely slow. I did a hard reset by holding the power button because I couldn't get to the onscreen shut down.

At sporadic times, my computer just shuts off - no warning.

It first happened after I installed and was using Handbrake.

hey all

I've been on Ubuntu for a couple months now, and love it. I have a few minor issues though. -when told to "shut down" ubuntu cannot turn my computer off. Randomly it will do a full power down, but more often then not it will shut down the os and halt at a blank screen, and I have to hold the power button down to fully power down.

Okay, the problems with my computer are becoming unacceptable, and no one has even tried to help me with them yet. Hibernate works, sure. I STILL NEED TO BOOT FROM A USB BOOTABLE DRIVE, OR ELSE IT STILL WILL NOT BOOT!Now, I have an even worse problem!!! Almost every time I try to turn the computer on, right after it actually powers on, it will power off.

i set a custom wallpaper background simply by right clicking on the image and selecting "set as background" but when i shut my computer off last night and turned it back on today, my desktop wallpaper was changed. it was a default plain blue color.

any idea why that happened?

this was the first time i shut my computer down since i installed ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

I've been starting my computer with Ubuntu, but when it boots up, after a purple screen with the Ubuntu logo, I don't get any GUI, just a black screen, with text as below:

I have a Lenovo x120e laptop that's had thermal issues from the start. I've tried everything I can, but I think there's nothing I can do to prevent it from overheating.

It regularly gets into the 90's C, but seems to only randomly shut down as a result of this.
