[ubuntu] Choice of external drives

http://ubuntuforums.org – I'm looking at getting an external hard drive for my computer, to put the Ubuntu OS on it. I understand these will handle the operating system perfectly well. However, I'm wondering whether some makes of external drive might be better than others...reason being, I noted the long lists of incompatible hardware and became concerned. I run a Dell Vostro pc, currently with WindowsXP on the main internal hard drive which I need to retain at this time. I've been looking at Seagate and also Western Digital external drives, 500GB (maybe higher). Can I assume that these drives would be fine for install (Hardware)

Is there a way to distinguish between the Internal Hard drives and External Hard drives.

Actually i need to see how many External hardrives do we have and to which server are they connected .

This is the Screenshot i took and by judging by its name SDE is external hard drive. But im not sure .

I am a novice user who upgraded to 11.10. In my previous version of Ubuntu, icons of my external drives(2) were visible and I could mount and navigate these drives. I cannot locate my external hard drives with 11.10. I have searched the questions with similar titles and have not found a solution.

The command: sudo fdisk -l does list both external hard drives.

I have two desktop computers, a Dell running ubuntu 10.04, and an Acer running win 7.

I'm looking for opinions regarding backing up to an internal drive versus an external drive.

I'm currently backing up to an external drive. It isn't silent and the noise annoys me. The fan is always on and it's the loudest thing in the room. I could just as easily use an internal drive.

I see lots of adamant online advice to keep the backups on the external drive.

Is it possible to set up the standard backup system in SBS 2011 (or Server 2008 R2) to use an internal drive as a destination as well as external drives?

Before you say yes, from my tests and from what I've read on the web, backups with internal drives included as a destination always seems to prefer the internal drive over connected external ones.

I have a 500 gig external usb, and a few 8 gig flash drives. If i copy a file (say a movie or large file) from my primary hard drive (80 gig WD formatted to ext3) to a usb drive it transfers very slowly, about 2 mb/s.

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to help out a friend with an odd issue. He has two external hard drives he was using as storage on a I-Mac. He had several terabytes of information on each drive, then one day the drives didn't show up on his mac.

We have all seen dual boot arrangements and such but I am interested in the extra security that a physical separation of hard drives would provide. I am curious why I have never seen switches on (power or data) cables for internal drives.
