[ubuntu] changing file types

http://ubuntuforums.org – When I rip a dvd to mkv using handbrake the resulting file is an application/x-matroska, which xbmc doesn't recognize as a video file and therefore won't play. When I used to use windows 7 to make mkv's with handbrake those files are labeled as video/x-matroska, which are seen as video files by xbmc. Is there a way to change the file from application to video? Also, why when I rip in linux, I also attempted this in mint 13, do the files become application/x-matroska, but all the files done in windows 7 are video/x-matroska? And is there a way to fix this so they always come out as video/ (Hardware)
