Dear Sir/Madam,
I have just upgraded ubuntu 10.04 32 bits desktop to ubuntu 12.04 32 bits desktop (through login into ubuntu 10.04 desktop GUI screen, and then upgrade to 12.01 through the popup "update manager" GUI screen), but got can't login though GUI screen problem, i.e.
I use Ubuntu, With different Desktop enviroments.
I had KDE for a while and after a week, suddenly my login screen changed to the look of KDE.
I am unable to get past the login screen. It won't accept passwords, the screen momentarily goes black, and then returns to the login screen.
I recently found out that you can use CTRL-ALT-F1 to switch from the login screen to the command line. My password works in that situation and I was able to enter terminal mode.
I typed in "startx" to see what would happen.
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 with a Cinnamon desktop.
Today, out of the sudden, I was kicked from desktop to login screen. I entered my password and noticed that my window decorations disappeared. I ran:
sudo aptitude reinstall cinnamon
After that I wasn't even able to login (black screen and back to login screen).
I have written an article about how to customize the Ubuntu login screen. After you edit the login screen, you may want to share your work on blogs and forums. However, you simply cannot just press the print-screen button to take screenshot of the login screen in Ubuntu. To do so, you can use a workaround command to preview the login screen and take screenshot of it.
Background:
I was trying to solve a problem I had with Libreoffice and installed/uninstalled a couple of packages (it is a fresh install of 12.10 Quantal). I don't know if it is related but there is now a long pause after the login screen, before showing the desktop.
I recently installed Solaris 10 as a VM. I was using the JDS and shut down the vm when I left the office. When I rebooted today I login in at the desktop login screen and press ok but I am reverted to the console screen for a spilt second and then back to the login screen. I log in as root and my password is correct because I am not met with an incorrect login error.
Since Ubuntu 9.10, installing new login screen themes or changing the login window appearances is not as easy as before.
On my FC 17-65 XFCE Spin system with noveau video driver, the following problem has cropped up:
I boot and login as an ordinary user. The XFCE desktop appears. I click the mouse on something and the desktop vanishes. Instead of the desktop I see the printing from the last text boot screen. Usually the login screen reappears, but sometimes I just stay stalled on the text screen.
