[ubuntu] Can't Enable Desktop Effects

http://ubuntuforums.org – Hi all. I'll start by saying that I'm very new to Ubuntu so I apologise if i don't understand some advice/instructions given to me. When I try and enable the visual effects it starts to search for available drivers and then I get a message saying "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I really have no idea how to go about fixing this and any help would be appreciated so much :) My laptop is a ASUS F5R and my graphics card is a ATI Radeon X1100M, although Ubuntu detects it as an ATI Radeon 200M. I heard somewhere they use the same chipset, so that might be why. Thanks in advance :) (Hardware)

i'm a new user to ubuntu and i installed it successfully with wubi installer inside my windows xp professional sp2. Whenever i enable desktop effects in my ubuntu from none to normal or extra. The system gives me a message like " desktop effects cannot be enabled":(

my configuration is

intel dual core 2.8GHz 1GB DDR1 RAM

Hi, I'm having some trouble running the Extra or Normal Settings in the Appearance/Visual effects setting on ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.31-12. with an Intel GMA X4500HD. I get an error message that says "Desktop Effects could not be enabled."

I'm trying to get compiz to run and avant dock does not seem to respond either without the Visual effects enabled.

I'm currently running Ubuntu 10.10 on VMware. My computer has a NVidia 8800GT graphics card.

I'm trying to activate the Desktop Effects but keep getting the following error message: "Desktop Effects could not be enabled"

I'm very new to Linux so I'm still in the extreme learning phase.

Could someone offer suggestions on how to get this to work?

My goal is to get Compiz to work.

I have a ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics card. I've seen in other posts that this has to do with the driver 'fglrx'. But when I do:

dmesg|grep 'fglrx'

I am using ubuntu 9.04 on ATI RADEON HD 2400 PRO Card. After installing ubunbtu when i tried to enable ati restricted driver from system-hardware (for enabling 3d Effects ie compiz ) I found a blank screen and on above it shows "No Proprietary Drivers are in use on this system".

I have installed Fedora 12 on my laptop (Lenovo X61s) and now I have some problems with my OS. Please help me to config my machine.

Currently I can not enable Desktop Effects any more. I receive this message: "Accelerated 3D graphics is not available. Desktop effects require hardware 3D support."

I have a P4 2.4 Ghz machine with a nVidia geForce 6200 pci card, 256mb. I have tried at least 4 iterations of Mint and other Ubuntu variants, trying to find a distro that will install the proper drivers that will enable desktop effects and run compiz.

I am a new Ubuntu 9.10 /Linux user and would greatly appreciate some expert assistance.
