I got the message that the version I have been running was no longer supported so I clicked the upgrade to 12.04 button. I took all of the defaults. On first boot it gave the messages
error: not a correct XFS inode.
error: you need to load the kernel first.
Press any key to continue.....
That dropped me to grub.
Recently had a system crash giving me ubuntu kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block
Tried to boot onto USB live Ubuntu, but I still end up with a frozen screen, black screen, frozen splash screen, or scrambled text and random flashing colors...
I can boot into the ubuntu recovery console and have tried to upgrade the kernel with
apt-get dist-upgrade, but it fails
Hi all,
I tried to upgrade F16 to F17 with preupgrade, but now I have the following problem:
When I boot my laptop, I see only "Upgrade to Fedora 17 (Beefy Miracle) in the GRUB 1.99 menu.
When I select this option, I get:
error: file not found
error: you need to load the kernel first
When I edit the grub commands, I see:
linux /upgrade/vmlinuz preupgrade repo=....
initrd /upgrad
hi .
i have fedora 17 in my pc ok !

when i click it a blackwindow come .
I had this problem the first time I installed Ubuntu, and with every dist-upgrade since then. I eventually fix it, but I've never known why it's fixed, and then it gets broken again.
I had 12.04 with my dual boot system. Yesterday I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 make bootable USB and choose Upgrade option in Installer. After installation Grub failed to boot my machine. I tried following to fix grub bootloder . Same problem I fixed with Ubuntu 12.04 using live USB but this solution not work for Ubuntu 12.10. Now coming at exactly where this solution goes fail.
I run:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
, and the linux kernel seemed to be updated to 3.2.0-31-generic successfully.
However, after I rebooted, I typed:
uname -a
, it showed :
Linux Albert-PC 3.2.0-29-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:03:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Does that means the kernel wasn't being updated?
Okay, I have a system with a dual boot of windows 7 32-bit ultimate and ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit. I use EasyBCD to manage my boot menu. Apparently during my upgrade to ubuntu 12.10 64-bit, grub failed to reinstall. I now have a grub prompt on a black and white screen.
