I am running Ubuntu 12.10 on one of my older laptops (Dell Mini 10V, modified with a Western Digital 640GB drive). I use it to keep a lot of documents (and pictures) on... I have kept it backed up via an external HD (Western Digital 1TB 2.5” drive).
Recently, it quit being able to copy all the folders to the external drive. Then external drive appeared to become corrupted.

computer answers 'unable to mount external USB hard drive'
Hi Guys,
bit of a n00b here just need a little help trying to identify if I am doing something incorrectly when mounting a USB external drive formatted in XFS.
I am typing:
sudo mount -t xfs /dev/sdb1 /media/external
And I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on dev/sdb1, missing code page or helper program or other error In some cases useful info is found
I am trying to mount my external NTFS-formatted HDD in Windows 7 Ultimate, but it is getting stuck. The system remains responsive, but the 'mounting progress bar' never goes to completion and the light on the drive continues to blink. No access to the drive is possible (e.g. attempting to view the contents).
