I need to transfer a large amount of data (over 20 GB) from laptop to desktop. Through creating a LAN between'em. I have a regular ethernet rj45 cable. Thus it should be simple - connect'em between each other with the cable and do the transfer, right? How do I do that?
I've got an Ubuntu* desktop, a windows XP laptop, a length of Cat5e Ethernet cable (y'know, the one with the squarish plug, usually blue, modern Internet connections use it), and no internet.
I've got to transfer a big bunch of files (Most of the laptop's hard drive, more than 50GB) over the cable to the desktop, into a specific directory.
I attempted a install on my desktop computer (which already had Windows installed), and everything was going fine, until I did a pacman -Syu and updated everything. My ethernet refused to work. ifconfig revealed that eth0 was up but no packet transfer. I could not connect to the internet at all. I spend a good 3 hours on it trying to get it to work.

I want to transfer files to my laptop from my desktop using bluetooth. On my laptop Linux Mint 14 and on my desktop Ubuntu 12.04 is running. Both of the computers have working bluetooth device. How can I do that?

I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop on an old machine for file sharing/media streaming and data backup.
Hi all,
I'm just having some issues with using various file mangers to transfer files within my Nexus's SD card. Basically the files don't seem to transfer correctly.
Example:
When I transfer a file from "ringtones" into my "music" folder it still doesn't show up in the "play music" app.
hopefully i have the right place for the thread this time lol.
my goal is to transfer the XP operating system from a Sony VAIO laptop on to either my desktop computer or (preferably)onto Virtualbox itself.
would this be at all possible? and if so, can the OS be "cloned" onto Virtualbox and leave the XP laptop fully functioning?
I try to transfer files from remote computer using ssh to my computer :
scp My_file.txt user_id@server:/Home
This should put My_file.txt in the home folder on my own computer, right?
I get
scp/Home: permission denied
Also when I try: ...@server:/Desktop, in order to copy the files from the remote computer to my desktop.
What am I doing wrong?
