I have installed ubuntu on my toshiba laptop and whenever I connect a microphone it doesn't detect any sounds at all. Everything worked well under xp. When I try sound recorder to record sounds it registers no sounds. The only thing that actually gets recorded is a sound when I remove or connect the microphone in its socket(a kind of a "click"). No its NOT muted I checked a million times.
HI! I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Acer Aspire 6530G. It has a ALC888 sound card. The loudspeakers work well, but the micorphone doesn't works. I tried to check if microphone was muted (alsamixer), I increased the microphone volume to the max value but nothing changed. Can anyone help me?
Sorry for my English, I'm Italian :(
I was on Google chat using the hangout feature, and my microphone doesn't work. I have a Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086 and I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with a Gnome 3 shell. It's been working fine before, until I tried installing Starcraft II under wine. I fear I may have screwed up some settings there. If anyone knows what information would be most helpful to post, then I'd be grateful.
I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a Acer Aspire One ZG5 (AOA 110), then Skype, and I can't make the microphone work. I tried this method with alsamixer

but it doesn't works. The sound is not recognized by alsamixer, nor by the sound settings.
Hello there. I have an acer aspire 5730zg and since I've installed ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 my microphone and card reader doesn't work. I have tried to make it work on both of them but I couldn't.
i tried typing on the console the following command: alsamixer I made sure that all the controls were on so I knew that I haven't muted the microphone. I'd apreciate if you helped me solve this.
Thanks, but that topic doesn't seem to point to any solution. Moreover that looks like a different problem than mine. My noise is generates on sounds recorded from the microphone.A picture of my alsamixer is at http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/6092/alsamixer.png

I just bought my new netbook Acer Aspire One 722. It works fine on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit version. Everything works good beyond microphone (external and internal). Internal works middling because it's very silent (despite the fact that in alsamixer is set to maximum, You can do something about it ?) and external doesn't work at all. When I connect external mic simply nothing happens.
Besides the problem in this thread, I have one other.
The integrated microphone on my netbook doesn't work.
I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04. My Samson C01U USB microphone, which has worked for many years on Ubuntu, now is having problems.
The symptom is as follows. After a reboot, the microphone works as expected. Recording with Audacity is fine. Then, after some indeterminate amount of time, the microphone disappears from the system.
