I have messed up my sudoers file and i want to change the permission on it.
When I login in recovery mode, I cannot run the command 'chmod' as it is read-only option.
I tried mount -o remount,rw / in recovery mode. Didn't work for me.
Err : Ext4-fs remount. Opts errors=remount-ro
How can I boot into recovery mode and with read-write option.
Environment - Ubuntu-11.10 in virtualbox.
I don't recall the last time I rebooted this machine, but it wasn't long ago and I don't think I made any many changes to it since then.
I get this problem even in recovery mode, even with older versions of Ubuntu that are still in the Grub menu (latest is Maverick). I ran the default repair of the Boot Repair, to no avail.
This is what comes up on boot:
Code:
...[sdb] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error - auto real locate failed
...mount: mounting /dev/disk/bu-uuid/d818....
I have installed Ubuntu on C drive instead of windows 7 Starter that I had on my EEE PC. It runs quite slow so I want to go back to Windows 7, I also need to run some softwares which require windows.
In the boot, I got the 5 choices(4 for ubuntu, memory test and their recovery mode) and one the Windows Recovery Partition.
To cut the story short, because of recent issues with a distribution upgrade I did now I have to play around with the Recovery Mode.

I'm able to gain access to the Recovery Mode without any issues. The problem I have is that I'm not able to gain read/write access to my filesystem.
I have a relatively new install of Ubuntu 9.10. I have two hard drives /dev/sda1 & /dev/sdb1 both ext3. Today for the first time a filesystem check was run on /dev/sdb1 but it ran after boot instead of before. I thought filesystem checks had to run in read only mode, before the filesystem was mounted.
I get this problem even in recovery mode, even with older versions of Ubuntu that are still in the Grub menu. I ran the default repair of the Boot Disk Repair (as recommended in this question), to no avail. This Pastebin shows my configuration.
How can I get my Ubuntu to boot?
...[sdb] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error - auto real locate failed
...mount: mounting /dev/disk/bu-uuid/d818....
I recently was mucking around with my graphics drivers on Ubuntu 12.10 (I have a Radeon HD 6950 and I was getting borderless windows and no lenses). After I rebooted, now Ubuntu will show the logo and the orange dots for a minute, then the screen will go black and everything will freeze.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 in an asus netbook.
I want to grab a dd image of the root filesystem, in order to save it for later restoration, in case the system gets bloated. I used to do this in debian once in a while, to have "working" instances of my system.
But in Ubuntu 10.10, I see that in the root shell prompt of the single user mode, all services are running.
