Hi, I installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 64-bit LTS beside my Win8 which is 64-bit, too from a memory flash drive. The problem is there is no such a list to select one of the installed operating systems. The computer itself runs Win8 automatically.
I want to install 12.04 on one hard disk and Windows 7 on another.
Windows 7 is set already installed on one hard disk, but when I try to boot
to it I get a "grub rescue" prompt and I don't know what to do with that.
I installed 12.04 to the other drive and again I got the grub rescue prompt
when I restarted the system to complete the installation.
Installed Ubuntu on HP xw4600 workstation using CD not USB. But after installation it does not boot from hard drive.
During installation it showed:
The entire disk will be used: /dev/mapper/isw_digjcabegb_Volume0(ext4) 250.1GB
Running “grub-install /dev/mapper”…
Error pop-up:
Unable to install GRUB in /dev/mapper
Executing ‘grub-install /dev/mapper’ failed.
I can only get an install to "stick" if I use shred to zerofill my drive first. Otherwise, when I install ubuntu or lubuntu 12.04, I will get "grub rescue: out of disk".
With the aforementioned (completely default) install on top of a zerofilled drive, then rebooting after installing updates will tell me there is no operating system.
hi, i am trying to install ubuntu server 12.04.1 and the installation seems to go fine. when the cd ejects and it reboots, i get the bios and then it goes black.
I know this isn't necessarily practical, but from a purely academic standpoint, I'm wondering if it is possible to install multiple boot loaders on a disk.
Would it be possible to install several operating systems on their own partitions, each with their own boot loader installed on its respective partition which could be invoked by selecting it from a boot loader on the MBR?
I'm trying to install a freshly downloaded copy of Ubuntu 12.04.1 onto a four-year-old Acer Aspire One netbook that uses an 8GB flash card rather than a standard hard-drive. I had 11.10 installed, but forgot my passwword, so I'm starting over with a USB drive installation.
My BIOS has some problems and sometimes boot order of disks changes. I thought that if I insall grub on to the MBR of second data disk, it may boot. First disk(sda) is for boot and operating system, second disk(sdb) is for /var. All partitions are labeled and fsck has labels as partition references.
I have install grub on to MBR of second disk by "grub-install /dev/sdb".
I had installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a separate partition, in ext4 format in my comp, which initially had only Windows 7 .I had done the installation from a Live USB, which gave me the option Install on boot, in a GRUB menu. I had chosen the option of "Installing Ubuntu alongside Windows". I had chosed the particular partition duing the install, and in mount part, I had given "/".
